Shadehouse CommonsThe People's Yard of Ashkarin

"Steel is hammered sharpest beneath a public eye."

📜 Overview:

Once merely a bleak marshy yard outside the Iron Court’s stone walls, the Shadehouse Commons has been transformed by decree of Overlord Amir Vexley into Ashkarin’s first public training grounds—a pragmatic measure to prepare civilians for times of siege, rebellion, or worse.

What began as militia drills has since evolved into something larger: a bustling proving ground for mercenaries, adventurers, hopeful soldiers, and ambitious commoners looking for a way out of the gutter—or a path to glory.

Here, careers are forged, legends stumble into their first steps, and recruiters watch from the shadows for fresh blood.

🏛️ Location and Layout:

  • Located just inside the Iron Court's outer walls, between the broad dry moat and the inner fortress.

  • A wide parade field of packed dirt, surrounded by splintered sparring posts, wooden bleachers, obstacle courses, and a central dueling ring of black-iron sand.

  • Training pens along the edges offer instruction in weapons, tactics, and minor magical arts.

  • Overlook balconies on the keep’s walls allow guards, officers, merchants, and secretive recruiters to observe in comfort.

The clammy air of the Iron Court still clings to the area—especially after heavy rains—but the liveliness of the Commons brings a rare kind of spirit to Ashkarin’s otherwise grim seat of power.

🛡️ Purpose:

  • Civilian Militia Training:
Basic drills are free to any Ashkaran citizen who can wield a sword (or is willing to learn). Vexley’s vision: a city ready to defend itself if (when) the outer provinces fall into chaos.

  • Adventurer Proving Grounds:
New adventurers test their mettle here before venturing into Bear Valley, the Blackfang Foothills, or Stonehell’s whispering deeps.

  • Faction Recruitment:
Members of the City Watch, Iron Vow, Rooted Circle, and even more secretive groups (like the Wheelmarked or Tower Arcana) scout the Commons regularly for promising prospects.

  • Public Spectacle:
Tournaments, war games, obstacle races, and dueling contests are held monthly to engage the populace, offer prize purses, and spot natural talent.

🧩 Hooks and Rumors:

  • A “special duel” arranged in the Shadehouse Commons could allow players to earn the favor—or wrath—of a noble house, a guild, or even Commander Brada Kett herself.

  • Wheelmarked recruiters secretly offer bets on duels, or offer winners a chance at... unofficial work, outside city law.

  • The Rooted Circle watches the Mud Trials closely, believing those who can outwit the swamp’s hazards without brute force are potential candidates for more delicate missions.

  • A "cursed duelist" rumor circulates—that one fighter has never lost a bout... but every opponent who strikes him dies mysteriously days later.

🏛️ Atmosphere:

While the Iron Court remains heavy with paranoia and political tension, the Shadehouse Commons offers a rare moment of hope, grit, and spectacle.
The clang of steel, the barked orders of trainers, and the roar of watching crowds add a grimy vitality to the cold stone world of Ashkarin's rulers.

Yet behind every opportunity gleams a shadow: every victory is watched, every talent appraised, and every failure quietly noted for future debts or punishments.
