🍂 The Sundering of Kin and the Rootward Pilgrimage

"From one root grew many branches—and many thorns."

📜 The Kintarien and the Old Religion

Long ago, before the borders of Ashkarin were etched in blood and stone, the Elves of the West were one people—the Kintarien, “Those Who Remember the First Song.”

They followed the Old Religion, a druidic and animistic faith rooted in the sacred balance of life, death, seasons, and stone. They revered the ley-lines as the veins of the world, the standing stones as divine markers, and themselves as humble stewards of nature’s design.

Their realm was vast, their groves harmonious, and their songs were etched into the bark of ancient trees and the bones of the land itself.

⚔️ The Sundering: Birth of Divergence

But harmony did not hold.

As the Highborn Houses of the Kintarien delved into magic—starlight weaving, planar traversal, and the divine echoes of mortal deeds—they abandoned the Old Religion. In its place, they raised the Grey Faith, venerating ascended mortals and mythic exemplars as gods—the Seldarine. Chief among them was Corellon Larethian, All-Father of the Starborn, and Fenmarel Mestarine, guardian of the outcast path.

These self-proclaimed Grey Elves viewed themselves not as nature’s servants, but as its shapers—destined to transcend.

The faithful to the Old Ways—the future Wood Elves—warned of imbalance, hubris, and the arrogance of mortal-born deities. Though war never took formal shape, the Sundering came through assassinations, exile, and the breaking of sacred bonds. The Kintarien fractured.

🛤️ The Rootward Pilgrimage

Refusing bloodshed but unwilling to abandon their creed, the Rootward faithful fled east.

Led by the last Rootward Druids, they endured decades of wandering—through collapsed groves, cursed battlefields, and ley-scoured plains—until they reached the confluence of lines near present-day Ashkarin. There, among whispering stones and verdant valleys, they rooted anew.

These became the Wood Elves—fierce, secretive, and bound not by law or prophecy, but by earth, growth, and renewal.

🌑 The Descent Below: The Drow and Chthonia’s Covenant

Some Highborn, spurned by Grey and Wood alike, turned not east—but downward.

In the deepest earth, they found Chthonia Trimorphia, the Threefold Goddess of the Hollow Moon. A divine echo of death, magic, and secrets, she offered them refuge and revelation—at a cost.

Her Dextral Path promised hidden wisdom. Her Sinister Path, the power of blood and shadow. The bargain was accepted.

Thus were the Drow born—not only marked by darkness, but remade in spirit, forging a society of silent hierarchies, arcane mastery, and whispered sacrifice.

🧙‍♂️ Echoes in Modern Ashkarin

Today, the legacy of the Sundering lives on in Ashkarin’s streets and its shadows:

  • Wood Elves tend forgotten groves and serve as rangers, healers, or wild guides, particularly around the Grove of Lost Stones or Duskwater’s herbal enclaves.

  • Grey Elves hold quiet authority in the Tower Arcana or among Ashkarin’s elite. Though rare, they are often behind secret alliances, lorekeeping, or hidden temples to Corellon and his pantheon.

  • Drow outcasts operate in the underworld, many connected to Khaldrith Nyx. Scholars of the Dextral Path mix openly with arcane societies; followers of the Sinister Path conduct rites deep below, where even the Watch fears to tread.

đź“– Closing Thought

"From one root, three branches grew: one kissed the stars, one bound itself to earth, and one plunged into the bleeding dark.
And none ever again sang the same song."
