Do You Need a Background?

Short answer: no.
Or at least… not yet.

Mortality is high. Ashkarin is not a place that rewards hubris or extended family trees. You may die in the first room you enter. It happens. Frequently.

That said, if you do want to start sketching a background, keep it short—no more than a single paragraph. Not because I'm not interested, but because you may get attached. There are dozens of groups, guilds, noble houses, cults, orders, and organizations to draw from. Many are named. Some are still waiting to be named. Use what’s there or work with me to invent what’s missing.

It’s absolutely acceptable—encouraged, even—to expand your background as you play and survive. You may start as a nameless sellsword with rusty chainmail and a haunted stare, only to reveal later that you’re the last Scion of House Bryth, heir to a ruined kingdom, or a sleeper agent of the Seekers of the Pattern.

Think less “you must prepare your backstory” and more “your story might reveal itself.”

So: don’t get too attached to your character.
AND I would like nothing more than for you to get very attached to your character and become emotionally entangled in their fate.

Note: The region is a living world and still under construction. If you're looking for a guild, cult, noble house, or shadowy bloodline to call your own—we can build that together. Just because it’s not listed doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
