Ember Skywardens

“We do not rise for glory. We rise because someone must watch the dark from above.”

🏰 Overview

The Ember Skywardens are a small, elite wing of aerial scouts stationed atop Ashlar Tower, the highest point of Ember Bastion. From this wind-battered height—known as the Vigilant Reliquary—they observe the skies, scan the distant lowlands, and carry messages between distant strongholds. Though their numbers are few and their steeds fragile, their duty is unwavering.

The Skywardens are not elite knights clad in gold and steel. They are practical, sharp-eyed riders chosen for discipline, observation, and unwavering caution. They are not meant for pitched battles—they are the eyes of the Bastion, not its sword.

🪶 Mounts: The Ember Hippogriffs

  • Number: 9 living, trained hippogriffs.

  • Appearance: Sleek and wiry, with mottled grey-and-umber feathers blending to ash-colored fur. Each bears subtle leather barding and a sky-blue cloth band on one leg—marked with the sigil of Vaughn.

  • Temperament: Skittish and flighty, but deeply bonded to their assigned rider.

  • Use: Reconnaissance, message delivery, supply drops, and fast aerial warnings.

  • Tactical Doctrine: “Live to warn.” If combat threatens, they retreat immediately.

Hippogriff Trait – Dragon Sense:
Hippogriffs can detect Song of Night Screams' presence within 1 mile. When this happens, they refuse to fly forward, screeching and spiraling back toward the Bastion.

🛡️ Skywarden Organization

Total Strength: 9 Skywardens (one per mount)
Commander: Captain Neral Caelwyn, a stoic half-elf who lost his hand to a wyvern strike during a stormwatch patrol. He now wears a steel prosthetic and commands from Ashlar’s topmost chamber.

Ranks:

  • Skywarden Captain (1)

  • Senior Skywardens (2) – Typically those who’ve flown over two seasons without casualty.

  • Line Skywardens (6) – Core riders and scouts.

Oath of Flight: All Skywardens swear the Oath of First Watch:

“No one sees before us. No one sounds the horn in our stead.”

They are taught map-reading, signal mirror use, coded horns, and aerial navigation. Each carries an engraved horn tuned to their hippogriff’s training and a wax-sealed map scroll for emergency dispatch.

🎭 In-Game Flavor Tip:

Skywardens delivering urgent messages to Ashkarin never land inside the city, but rather circle the southern tower spire, where a sigil-bearer waves confirmation, then return without delay. Even a short flight is a gamble with Song of Night Screams’ silent domain.

Would you like an encounter table for what might intercept, aid, or harass a hippogriff rider in that airspace?
