Temple District

🛕 Temple District

Overview:
Perched along Ashkarin’s eastern slope, just past the last rows of mossy tenements and silent plazas, lies a district heavy with incense, echoes, and the lingering scent of ash. This is Ashkarin’s Temple District—home not only to the famed Temple of St. Ras and the haunted Old Gravefield, but to the humble sanctuaries and shrines of lesser-represented gods. These are deities with fewer worshippers, stranger rites, and no shortage of presence.

The streets here twist in odd angles, echoing half-forgotten celestial patterns. The district is quiet during the day, but at night, candlelight flickers behind stained glass, and the low drone of prayers—sometimes in tongues dead for centuries—carries on the wind.

đŸ”„ Temple of St. Ras and the Old Gravefield
A stern, soot-streaked stone temple with brass doors blackened by ceremonial flame. St. Ras’s clergy are bound by vow and vision, lighting nightly fires for the souls of the fallen. Behind the temple sprawls Old Gravefield, a vast cemetery older than Ashkarin itself. Mausoleums and vine-wrapped tombs rise like forgotten altars. The catacombs below remain largely uncharted.

Blue lights have been seen among the graves. The clergy say it’s just lost spirits. The gravediggers whisper of something deeper.

â›Ș Notable Lesser Temples and Shrines in the District

đŸ§± Sanctum of Lughrin Worldshoulders
Built partially into the slope, this stone-hewn temple is more vault than church. Dwarven stonemasons tend to an ever-expanding mural of carved blueprints and runic patterns, each said to be divinely inspired. Priest-Architect Vogar Thurn offers blessings over construction projects and will judge a building’s “soul” if asked.
Adventurers often leave gemstones here—not for greed, but to honor the divine blueprint.

📜 House of the Road and Scale (Temple of Nisaba)
A modest square structure of polished clay bricks, with ledgers embedded in the walls and golden scales hanging from beams. Worshipped by farmers, merchants, and scribes alike, Nisaba’s clerics offer fair contracts, mediate disputes, and bless harvests.
High Scribe Elenai keeps the city's oldest contract vault here—sealed by waxes only a truth-priest may break.

🌊 Sanctuary of the Velvet Current (Temple of Oshun)
White marble, flowing silks, and open courtyards filled with music. A fountain at the center overflows with scented water. Worshippers dance nightly, led by High Cantor Seraphen, who claims she was once healed of heartbreak by Oshun herself.
It is said no weapon may be drawn within the temple grounds without weeping.

đŸ”„ The Hearth Within (Sovereign Church Flame-Hall)
A domed chamber with a great central hearth that has never gone cold. The clergy of the Sovereign Church tend to the “inner fire” of Ashkarin’s people through daily meditations and philosophical debates.
Visitors are greeted with silence and a seat beside the flame. Keeper Laran Vex, cousin to the Overlord, speaks rarely, but his sermons burn with iron purpose.

🌊 Temple of Straasha, the Water King
A cool, sea-salt-scented hall of aquamarine stone. Nautical relics hang beside sacred driftwood, and a carved wave crest marks the altar. Tidewarden Jessa Morvain offers blessings of safe passage, especially before trade caravans depart.
Sailors whisper that one of the fountains is fed by an underground spring connected to the sea—though no well-digger has confirmed it.

🎭 The Laughing Bone-House (Shrine to Samadi, the Macabre Jester)
Painted masks cover the outer wall, and the interior resembles both a puppet stage and a gallows. Laughter echoes eerily here, though no source is ever seen. Jester-Priest Molko delivers sermons with grim humor and unsettling precision.
It is considered good luck to leave a joke written on bone or parchment inside the shrine.

☠ Crypt Shrine of the Duke of Bones
Hidden among the mausoleums of Old Gravefield, this underground ossuary is lined with skulls and quiet offerings. Tended by the silent order of the Gravebinders, it is a place of respect—not horror—for the undead. Animators may seek “permission” here before crafting their servants.
Only those who light a black candle and descend alone may find the true altar.

đŸč Shrine of the Horned Lord
A grove-like enclosure at the edge of the district, with antlered totems and a central tree grown through a collapsed chapel. Offerings of meat and antler are left here, and howling rites are held on the solstices.
Some say the shrine was built on a wild hunt path and that those who sleep here may wake
 changed.

🌙 The Moonvault of Corellon Larethian
Tucked behind a crescent garden of silverleaf trees, the Moonvault is quiet, pale, and steeped in ritual. Built in layered arcs of marble and moon-glass, its structure mirrors constellations only remembered by the eldest bloodlines. Inside, the Scriptorium of the Seldarine houses texts so ancient they must be read by moonlight and remembered in silence.

Grey elves dominate the priesthood, serving as both scholars and gatekeepers of the ancient mysteries. Wood elves are honored but peripheral—wild children of the same dream. Drow are permitted entry only under silent supervision. Half-elves are not forbidden, but are rarely taken seriously. Mastery of the Moonvault’s inner teachings—the Petals of the Falling Moon—is said to require an elven lifetime. Most believe the blood must be pure to ever truly comprehend them.

Humans are allowed access only through an outreach program on elven culture and philosophy. While welcome in theory, they are not expected to progress beyond surface devotion.

✝ Other Features in the District

Pilgrims' Rest Inn
A low-cost hostel for traveling faithful. The food is plain, but the beds are blessed.

The Ember Arch
An ancient archway of scorched stone said to mark the district’s original divine boundary. Birds do not perch upon it.

Cenotaph of the Unknown Flame
A monolith engraved with the names of priests and saints lost during the Dominion’s collapse. New names are still added in times of divine silence.

The Coin of Guilt
A stone altar surrounded by copper coins, where the condemned once offered their last prayers. Now a place for penance and forgiveness.
