Scene: The Chartering Ceremony of Fall
In the heart of Ashkarin, the Embercourt Plaza thrums with quiet tension. The ancient stones underfoot are cracked with age, ivy creeping up the weathered facades of the civic buildings that encircle the square.
Behind the central dais looms a massive black iron relief: the severed heads of a hydra, each one snarling as it tumbles into a yawning pit — a grim monument to the dangers that await below.
Eighty adventurers stand gathered before the dais. Some wear gleaming plate, others the patchwork leathers of long travel, and more than a few don homespun cloaks, lovingly stitched with hope and anxiety. Their formation is loose, uncertain — some stand tall and resolute, others glance about nervously, gripping weapon hilts with whitening knuckles.
The air is crisp with frost, tasting faintly of smoke and stone. Overhead, a cloud of ravens circles, their black wings whispering across the sky like a herald of fate.
Flanking the plaza are the silent sentinels of the Iron Watch — their eyes hidden beneath burnished helms, each one bearing the red sigil of service. They stand unmoving, unreadable.
And at the center, upon a blackstone platform veined with silver, stands Lord Vexley, the Invincible Overlord. His sable robes glint with iron chainwork. His gaze is sharp and unblinking as he leans forward over a lectern carved from the same black stone that supports his rule.
He speaks.
"Step forward, you eighty brave fools. Look to the one behind you. Go on — shake their hand in sincere welcome."
(An awkward ripple runs through the crowd. Hands clasp. Some linger. Some squeeze a little too hard.)
"Very good. One of you will die."
(Silence. Not a cough, not a murmur. Even the ravens fall quiet.)
"Of the half of you that survive your first foray into the dark, half of that group will return to Ashkarin — broken in some places, braver in others — to join the Iron Watch, or Arcantower, or one of the many temples. There, you’ll spend your days retelling the twenty minutes you spent in blind terror — massaging it into your origin story. You’ll guard gates, scribe scrolls, bless the sick, and warn the next crop of bright-eyed fools not to do what you did."
"That leaves twenty of you. Twenty who will scrape through the gauntlet of goblins, ghosts, and gods-forsaken tombs with most of your fingers and your sanity intact. You might fall in love. You might make enough gold to start a bakery, or a smithy, or that tavern you've dreamt about. You’ll become local legends. Shopkeeps. Innkeepers. Faded murals on the walls of drinking halls."
"Of these twenty who continue delving, some will scrounge and save every coin, only to find it never quite enough to build a stronghold. A few might make it — one in three hundred, perhaps — earning the fabled hundred thousand gold, only to drown in the paperwork and politics required to become barons or baronesses under my empire."
"And once in a thousand, one of you will not only build a stronghold and earn a title, but will embrace the grind of rule — the patrols, the demanding settlers, the vicious brigands, the endless diplomacy. Do you know how rare that is? There are only four such names carved into the granite pillar of Founders' Row. Four. You may meet them out there. They are not so remarkable, except in their tenacity."
"So here is my advice: Use your head. Avoid unnecessary fights. Pick the low-hanging fruit. Run from a dragon if you see one. Come back alive, without shame. This city needs adventurers. But it needs them alive. We are building an empire — not with martyrs, but with minds."
"The dark beneath this world is deep, but you do not need to stay there. Return to us often, and return whole. We will build a powerful future together — one coin at a time, one tale at a time. Your Charter is not just a license to explore... it is a promise: That Ashkarin does not forget those who dared to step into the unknown."
"Now... go."
