🌊 Key Traits

TraitDescription
Insular and WeatheredOutsiders are treated with careful, quiet suspicion. No one is rude—unless you whistle indoors.
Dual DevotionThe townsfolk venerate both Straasha, the ancient Water King, and Nisaba, the Keeper of Grain and Ledger—representing the town’s eternal dance between law and tide.
Worship PracticesDaily blessings at the tide-shrine, ledger-keeping in salt-cured books, and bone charms exchanged for luck.
Feral AlliesKnown to host Windrider halflings from the nearby Windward Hills when coastal thermals drop them mid-glide. These bird-riders are among the few outsiders tolerated, even welcomed.
Nearby ThreatsThe Old Dominion ruins, two miles inland, are shunned and unspoken of. Locals call them “the echo rocks” and refuse to enter without a lantern, salt, and a whispered vow to the tide.

🏘️ Settlement Layout

Despite its small size, Gullhollow has a peculiar sense of depth. Its buildings lean like shipwrecks on land, strung with lantern lines and shell-chimes.

Key Locations:

1. The Tide-House Inn

  • Only tavern and lodging. Run by Vella Swan, a terse, one-eyed woman who claims her other eye dreams the sea’s future.

  • Known for: kelp wine, smokefish stew, and eerie wind-flute music drifting from the chimney.

2. Shrine of the Deep Breath (Straasha’s Tide-Shrine)

  • Located in a half-flooded cave accessible only during low tide. Watched over by Wavecaller Thessa, a salt-cloaked priestess with seaweed hair and storm-scarred hands.

  • Offerings: Pearls, seawater, driftwood votives. No one enters barefoot.

3. Ledger-Stone Pavilion (Nisaba’s Open Shrine)

  • A stone table beneath a bent fig tree, ink-stained and covered in wax-sealed ledgers.

  • Used for: birth and death registration, contract witnessing, oath-taking, and seasonal offerings of grain or honey.

  • Tended by Inksister Dova, who speaks in perfect meter and never forgets a name.

4. Echo Bluff

  • A steep overlook that faces the sea. Voices echo here out of sync, often whispering back truths yet unsaid.

  • Local tradition: Before a ship leaves, its captain kneels here and asks, “Will I return dry?”

5. Blackhive Beekeep

  • Coastal apiary kept by three reclusive sisters. Their salt-honey is potent, used in rituals and curatives. They speak only to those who bring beeswax and silence.

💀 Rumors & Local Lore

  • “The sea forgets nothing.” Locals say names whispered into the tide return in dreams.

  • “If you hear a bell and see no boat, close your shutters.” That’s the sound of the wrong kind of ship returning.

  • The Salt Rock near the shore is rumored to keep something bound beneath the waves. Fishermen leave blood-pennies in its cracks.

🕯️ Faith and Rituals

Straasha – The Water King

  • Worshipped as the soul of the sea, guardian of the drowned, and breaker of false sailors.

  • His clergy are feared and respected, and anyone setting to sea without his blessing is courting death.

  • Undead from the sea (those touched by Pyaray) are considered unclean violations, and Gullhollow's people will not bury or burn them. They bind them in salt nets and drop them back where they came from.

✍️ Nisaba – The Ledger-Keeper

  • Venerated for her role in managing grain, keeping order, and remembering names lost to the tide.

  • Her presence balances the fluidity of Straasha with the permanence of ink and law.

  • Marriage contracts, oaths, and fishing quotas are all managed under her sacred gaze.

📦 Trade & Goods

  • Exports: Salt-honey, dried fish, smoked eel, sea-glass charms, kelp-wine, bone totems

  • Imports: Ink, paper, iron tools, beeswax, simple cloth

  • Merchants from Ashkarin rarely deal directly, instead sending middlemen with nerves of steel.
