đŤď¸ Siren, the Fog-Crowned Anchorage
"There are charts for currents and maps for reefs, but none for what the tide remembers."
âCommon saying in Siren
đď¸ Overview
Siren is a coastal thorp of deep superstition and sharper silence, nestled at the edge of the infamous Sirenâs Teethâa deadly sprawl of reefs, jagged stone, and shipwrecks. Despite its size, it commands disproportionate influence due to one thing: the Mistmarks, a rising criminal syndicate funded and tested by Draxigarâs Council of Iron Lamps.
In Siren, fish do not rot, gulls whisper secrets, and coin is rarely asked for out loud. Trade happens in favors, tokens, and tidebone dice. Ashkarin claims jurisdictionâbut the Mistmarks ensure Siren remains independent, for now.
đ Population of Siren
Estimated Permanent Population: ~120â150
-
Breakdown:
-
~80 common residents (fishers, net-weavers, gull handlers, dockworkers)
-
~30â40 Mistmark affiliates (runners, silencers, scouts, dicekeepers)
-
~10â15 outsiders or âquiet guestsâ (smugglers, underworld agents, hidden allies)
-
Plus an always-fluctuating number of transient ships' crews, illicit traders, and "favored visitors" that pass through the Brine Ring or Lowshore Docks
-
đ Key Locations (Map Keyed)
1. The Brine Ring â Fog Licensing Circle & Bone Shrine
A circular stone platform ringed in salt-crusted posts and driftwood fetishes. This is where Mistmark operatives conduct symbolic contracts and roll their mysterious tidebone dice. Visitors seeking smuggling passage, protection, or information must stand hereâand let the fog decide.
đď¸ Hidden below is a sealed grotto where the original Mistmark charter was signed in salt and blood.
2. Temple of the Twin Depths â Shrine of Straasha and the Drowned Siren
An open-air sea-temple shaped from reefstone and broken hulls. Serves both Straasha (Water King) and the mysterious Siren-That-Sleepsâan ancient sea-spirit bound beneath the Teeth. Clerics pour seawater through gull feathers in rites of safe passage.
đ The high priest, Nolla Brinechant, is blind but claims the sea reads her prayers by scent alone.
3. The Crooked Net â Tavern & Mistmark Recruitment Den
The largest structure in Siren, made from five different shipwrecks lashed together and tarred black. The Crooked Net serves pickled eel ale and gull eggs with fermented kelp. In the back room, Mistmark hopefuls are testedânot with oaths, but bone, smoke, and silence.
đ˛ Roll a tidebone die, and the Mistmarks decide your fate.
4. Sirenâs Watch Loft â Lantern Ward and Lookout Post
A squat lighthouse overlooking the reefs, burning blue oil at all hours. The flame turns blue-green if a liar passes beneath. The lantern keepers are also Mistmark scouts, trained to watch for sigils carved in sailcloth.
đĄ During storms, the light is said to show only for those who are âmeant to survive.â
5. Lowshore Docks â Open Market & Silent Trade
These tide-washed docks serve as the village's economic lifeline. Ships trade goods-for-favors, and locals often avoid speaking aloud. Instead, deals are carved into fishbone slips or âspoken to the tide.â
đ A cracked Dominion-era bell here is said to ring when someone lies about what they carry.
6. Limmel the Nail-Eater's Yard â Shipwrightâs Shop & Memory Vault
Limmel is Sirenâs only shipwright and claims to remember every boat ever built, docked, or sunk. His house is filled with carved models and saltwood sketches. Some are of vessels that havenât existed yet.
𪾠He sells boats... but only to those who know the right birdcall.
7. Sandbellâs Ropehouse â Enforcerâs Rookery
This tangled maze of drying ropes, fishing lines, and netted gulls is the headquarters of Kelpin the Sandbell, Mistmark enforcer. Anyone found cheating in Siren is âtied into the tideâ here. The sand on the floor never dries.
â ď¸ Rumor: some of the hanging ropes are old Mistmarks who failed their silence rites.
8. Tideweaver's Grove â Home of the Bone-Witch
A circle of twisted elderwood trees surrounding a stone basin of brine and bones. The Bone-Witch, Mother Shai, is Sirenâs true heartâancient, veiled, and feared. She reads bones, names storms, and speaks for the Teeth.
đ Every Mistmark initiation passes through her hands.
9. Echo Island â The Echo Crabs' Lair
A mossy islet in the center of the bay. Home to the Echo Crabs, strange shell-dwellers that memorize and repeat spoken contracts when given pickled eel. The Mistmarks use them as living archives.
đ§ The wrong word in the wrong crabâs shell can summon debt collectors from beyond the reef.
