🏞️ The Ruins of Arden Vul
Perched above the Vale of Distant Thunder and carved into the bones of the Old Dominion’s final gasp, the ruins of Arden Vul straddle both memory and myth. From the sheer drop of the Cliff of Echoes, the ruin crowns a wind-scoured mesa above the tangled river valleys and broken dominion roads that once linked it to Draxigar.
Now, two years into rediscovery and early reclamation efforts, only fragments remain of the fortress-city that once guarded planar secrets and Dominion rites.
🧠Key Locations in the Surface Ruins
1. The Cliff of Echoes (bottom right of map)
A sheer, wind-sliced precipice falling over a thousand feet into the mist.
🪶 Legends say that if you speak a lie near the edge, your own voice will betray you, screaming back the truth from the depths.
→ The narrow switchback trail carved into the cliff’s side is treacherous and unmaintained.
→ Pale Lodge scouts and Azure Shield knights have begun installing anchor points and chalk markers for safety.
2. The Central Basin and Pool (center-left of map)
Once a sacred reflecting pool, this cratered depression now fills with rain and runoff from the ruins.
→ A broken aqueduct still trickles water.
→ Something occasionally moves beneath the surface—smooth, silent, and massive.
3. The Great Gatehouse and Broken Span (center-left, along the stream)
What remains of a Dominion bridge over the basin. The southern abutment is intact; the northern side is half-swallowed by earth.
→ This once served as a primary checkpoint for all who entered the temple tier of the city.
→ Wheelmarked scouts now use the stone remains as a semi-permanent outpost, carving graffiti into its cracked parapets.
4. The Ziggurat of the Ninefold Rostra (top-center of map)
An old stepped pyramid aligned to the Dominion’s star-charts.
→ Still resonates with celestial magic. During certain eclipses, faint hymns echo from within.
→ The Pale Lodge believes this may have been a gate-stabilization engine—but its inner chambers remain sealed.
5. The Shrine of the Silent Threshold (right side, along the cliff edge)
A row of obelisks and a pillared shrine now broken and scattered.
→ Rumors suggest this was once a place where sentinels took oaths before descending into “the black halls” below.
→ If approached after nightfall, one’s own footsteps cease to make sound—sometimes even one’s heartbeat.
6. The Collapsed Barracks and Smithworks (bottom-left quadrant)
Fallen arches, forge ruins, and shattered stone housing.
→ Knights of the Azure Shield speculate this was where the Dominion armed its planar vanguard.
→ Unusual veins of cold iron and star-metal are found threaded through the rubble.
7. The Folded Gate (Rumored) (north-center or buried location beneath ziggurat)
Not visible, but ancient Dominion records speak of a “gate folded thrice upon itself, so the world could not remember its face.”
→ Believed to be sealed in one of the sunken vaults, near the base of the ziggurat.
→ Whispered sightings by scavengers include: reflections that don't match the observer, voices speaking forgotten dialects, and tools disappearing into thin air.
8. Dominion Roads and Supply Traces
Now partially exposed thanks to erosion and excavation.
→ A faint Dominion causeway once led northeast toward Draxigar, now known as the Dominion Road.
→ It is more suggestion than road now—deep ruts and broken stones, but enough for single-file mule caravans.
→ Trade caravans and tomb-delvers from Vetucaster (Gosterwick) now reinforce it slowly with hired labor.
