🧭 Overview

Tucked into a cliff-scalloped bay where the sea runs dark and strangely warm, Shellhollow is a tide-haunted village built inside the fossilized remains of ancient sea-beasts. Homes are shaped from coiled nautiloid shells, scalloped ammonite spires, and the ribbed husks of creatures long forgotten—even by the Dominion.

When the tides rise, much of the village vanishes beneath the waves. The residents float. When the tide falls, they harvest rare salt, tend to their dyes, and walk the revealed pathways among barnacle-choked fossils said to remember voices.

🌊 Architecture & Setting

  • Shell Homes: Homes built within or around massive fossil shells; interiors are rounded, echoing, and often bioluminescent from barnacle glass or shell-polished lanterns.

  • Tide Paths: Spiraling causeways of bone and drift-wood planks marked with tidal glyphs.

  • The Listening Wall: A craggy bluff etched with wave-worn grooves. Locals whisper secrets here during low tide; it's said the stone remembers—and responds by reshaping dreams.

  • Floating Markets: Lightweight rafts chained together when tides permit; sea-lily tonics, salted drift kelp, and spiral-bone amulets are sold here.

đŸ§‘â€đŸŒŸ People of Shellhollow

Shellhollow folk are soft-voiced, salt-skinned, and reclusive. They value quiet speech, tide-lore, and respect for what lies beneath. All children learn to swim before they can walk. Some are born with shell-patterns across their skin, considered a blessing—or a warning.

🎭 Key Figures

  • Tuna Derrovale – Tidecaller & Elder
An elderly woman who carries a spiral horn said to calm sea-quakes. She walks barefoot, speaks only in song, and claims to remember when the fossils still moved.

  • Kemal Thornwick – Fossil-Reader
Sharp-eyed and soot-fingered, he etches tide-maps onto shell plates and claims the fossils shift position when storms approach. Believes something beneath the bay is still dreaming.

  • Melike Ashroot – Dye-Maker & Salt Brewer
Runs the bubbling cauldron raft that floats near the bone-buoy line. Her dyes are deep purple, indigo, and blood-orange—known to stain memories into cloth.

🌘 Traditions & Superstitions

  • The Stillwake Rite: Once a year, the village floats lanterns from shell-barges during a midnight low tide. No one speaks during the rite. Each lantern must return before dawn—or it’s said the sea will reclaim someone.

  • Shell Names: Every person is given a second, hidden name engraved into a fossil shard and placed in the Bone Vault. Only elders know them.

  • The Spiral Law: It is forbidden to enter a shell that has not opened in the past tide. To do so is to trespass on the dead—or the dreaming.

đŸ§± Defenses & Secrets

  • Isolation is their shield: Shellhollow is unmarked on most maps and unreachable by land carts.

  • Reef-bound Spines: Fossilized spires break the bay entrance, shredding ships that don’t follow the true path. Locals know the route by whale-song and ripple-sign.

  • Something Sleeps Below: Whispers say the fossil reef is the crown of an ancient behemoth, and that its dreaming mind can be heard in deep water. Some nights, the tide moans with breath not wind.

🎒 Trade & Exports

  • Amberflesh Fossils: Soft, glowing amber formed in sea-creature husks—used in magic, jewelry, and illusions.

  • Saltcrust Dyes: Rare pigments that bind with memory or emotion (useful in arcane rituals or dreamcraft).

  • Spiralbone Amulets: Faintly magical charms that repel scrying or protect against drowning (once per day, advantage on CON save vs. suffocation).

  • Sea-Lily Tonics: Potent sleep aids and dream catalysts brewed from pale stalks harvested only during blood moons.

⚓ Plot Hooks

  • A fossil opened last night—and there were wet footprints leading away.

  • A sailor returned from Shellhollow unable to speak—but paints prophetic spirals in his sleep.

  • A collector in Ashkarin offers 1,000 gp for a "living fossil" from Shellhollow—no questions asked.

  • Tuna Derrovale claims the dreaming beast is waking—and only the spiral-born can sing it back to sleep.

  • A tidal curse is affecting the village: the water refuses to recede. Something beneath the reef is holding it in.
