⚔️ The Forgotten Battle

Long ago—so far back that even the Dominion’s oldest tomes do not agree—the Battle of Kessarith Vale was fought between an invading human empire and the fractured legions of the Old Kingdoms, aided by wildfolk and moon cults. What should have been a final stand became a massacre.

The dead could not be buried properly—their blood cursed the soil. The victors tried to seal the land with stone cairns, bound by names and ancient runes, each marking a soldier or spirit left unrested. Thousands of them dot the vale.

But the binding was imperfect. Over centuries, something older than the battle began to stir beneath.

And now… the cairns breathe.

🪨 The Cairns Themselves

  • Each cairn is a stack of weathered stone, about 4–6 feet tall, often laced with moss, bone trinkets, or animal skulls.

  • They shift position subtly, especially during full moons. Entire formations are known to rearrange overnight.

  • Some contain bones, others nothing at all, and a few are hollow—filled with soft earth, fur, and claw marks.

  • Destroying a cairn without ritual safeguards risks lycanthropic infection, madness, or even spiritual possession by a cursed soul.

Types of Cairns:

  • Watcher Cairns: Face toward Dominion ruins, believed to keep some ancient spirit sealed.

  • Wyrdcairns: Exude a constant low hum. Placing a silver coin atop one is said to delay the curse… for a time.

  • Moonfang Cairns: Cracked and clawed—fresh blood is sometimes found beneath them. Werewolves are drawn to these during full moons.

🌑 Lycanthropy of the Vale

Lycanthropy here is not a disease—it’s a birthright of the cursed dead, a spiritual inheritance passed by blood, dreams, or exposure to the cairns. It is not always immediate, and sometimes comes as visions, urges, or night-wanderings.

Moonbound Packs roam the Vale, bound by unknowable instincts. They:

  • Sleep within ruined cairns

  • Gather in ancient battle formations on full moons

  • Speak only in whispers and howls

  • Can be eerily intelligent—some even retaining fragments of their old lives

Important Note: Not all Moonbound are evil. Some fight the curse, even as they are compelled to obey it. Others embrace it as holy inheritance—wolf-priests of the field, seeking to spread the old blood.

🗺️ Locations of Note

The Black Crown Cairn

Largest cairn in the Vale, ringed with thorned bramble and adorned with silver-burned bones. Said to contain the body of a betrayed general—perhaps the first Moonbound.

The Red Drift

A part of the plain where cairns sink into the soil, half-buried and bleeding dark fluid after storms. Travelers report hearing their own names whispered here.

Cairnforge Crater

A ruined Dominion forge-temple shattered by divine magic. The moon never rises directly above it, and werewolves avoid it—except during eclipses.

The Grove of Knotted Horns

Once a sacred grove, now twisted and half-dead. Packs gather here under specific moons to pass judgment on intruders or their own cursed kin.
