Last night in our Old School Essentials campaign, the party completed Modnar’s Tower, an arcane ruin perched near the edge of the infamous Stonehell Dungeon.
The adventurers made their way through the tower’s crumbling halls, first tangling with a giant spider that nearly killed the paladin before the group managed to cleave it in half. In the winding corridors that followed, the thief triggered multiple traps—cleverly hidden mechanisms left behind by Modnar.
Deeper in the complex, they were ambushed by a pair of bugbears after the thief fell in a pit. The fight was brutal and nearly ended in disaster, but teamwork and a few lucky rolls pulled them through.
They uncovered a mysterious portal chamber filled with geometric sigils and flickering glyphs. These weren't just teleportation circles—they were resonant transit nodes, attuned to some deeper system of magic linked to the dungeon’s unseen depths.
They also encountered a strange set of sparring constructs—octon-like training bots, remnants from Modnar’s old workshop. The rogue nearly got mobbed in the initial barrage, but the group managed to outmaneuver and disable the machines when the necromancer emptied his bag of bones and skeletons formed to fight for the party.
The real discovery came in the tower’s cellar, where they found Node Alpha—an eight-foot crystalline cylinder filled with shifting, emotional light. It pulsed with psychic energy, surrounded by arrays of tuning forks and glowing Elven glyphwork.
There, they met Vessira Klyn, a half-elf rogue-mage who had stolen the Sunshard of Alvestra to reactivate and stabilize the Crucible. She wasn’t hostile—just guarded, exhausted, and surprised to see adventurers who weren’t there to steal or destroy. She explained the lattice: a network of Crucible Nodes designed to offset the influence of a powerful psychic entity. The Crucibles emit counter-harmonics to dampen its resonance and maintain the fabric of reality.
Elsewhere in the ruins, the group rescued a band of kobold traders fleeing from a gelatinous cube, earning their favor. They also encountered three survivors of an earlier adventuring party—one of them a familiar dwarven face, badly wounded but grateful.
Having cleared the tower and secured the node, the party withdrew to rest and recover. But now they know what lies ahead: Stonehell itself. Whether they descend by choice or subtle manipulation remains unclear—but it seems the dungeon is calling.
