The Royal Eyes of Aundair serves as the crown’s elite covert force. Its operatives spy on other nations, pursue Aundair’s most notorious criminals, and undertake all sorts of cloak-and-dagger missions for Queen Aurala. The history of the Royal Eyes goes back to Lady Aundair herself, who had a handful of loyal agents she used to gather intelligence throughout the kingdom—and to watch the activities of her younger siblings.

Aundair is renowned for its wizards, and the Royal Eyes of Aundair excel at spellcraft and divination—almost every agent of the Royal Eyes has an arcane advantage. Agents spy on other nations, pursue notorious criminals, and engage in a host of other wand-and-dagger missions for the crown.

Aundair's intelligence agency, the Royal Eyes lack the sheer number of sources and boots on the ground that the Dark Lanterns cultivated prior to the outbreak of the Last War. Still, they are one of the premier intelligence agencies in Khorvaire, leaning on magical might from both spells and items to cover ground where they lack personnel.

While the Royal Eyes ultimately report to Aurala, the day-to-day operations are handled by her spymaster Thuel Racannoch. Thuel has only held the position for the past two years - he replaced Nara ir’Galanatyr, who retired under mysterious circumstances to Wyr shortly after Aurala signed the Treaty of Thronehold. Thuel is completely loyal to Aurala, having worked his way up the ranks the hard way over many years, without the usual benefit of an easy start granted to those of noble birth.

Members

Basic operatives come from all professions, races, and nationalities—the only requirement is that the agent have a talent useful to the organization. Full members are drawn only from Aundairian citizens, and of them, the Royal Eyes recruits only the most patriotic citizens, individuals who place crown and country above their own concerns.

An agent who joins the Royal Eyes might work for years before becoming a full member. The organization examines all candidates thoroughly, sending them on difficult missions to test their loyalty and commitment to Aundair. Once proven, recruits spend a year or more studying at the Tower of Eyes. Recruits receive extensive combat training, instruction in the rudiments of magic use, and the secrets of espionage techniques perfected over the centuries.

History

The Royal Eyes is as old as Aundair itself, first formed when Lady Aundair came to power. Not trusting her sworn lords, she charged her allies and followers with safeguarding her regency. These operatives watched the vassal lords, protected their mistress, and thwarted conspiracies that rose against her.

Over the centuries, the Royal Eyes has expanded its operations and looked beyond Aundair’s borders, examining developments in the other realms. When old rivalries blossomed into suspicion and eventually violence, the Tower of the Eyes began dispatching agents to infiltrate enemy organizations, royal courts, and other institutions, legal and otherwise. These agents report their findings to Aundair, where the Spy Master gathers salient aspects and files reports with the crown. Today, the Royal Eyes considers itself the best-informed agency in Khorvaire.

The Winks

This pair of Royal Eyes of Aundair regularly works together and, unlike many of their fellow spies, knows each other’s identity. They are good friends who have pledged their lives to each other. The only thing in the multiverse more important to each than the other is their service to the country of Aundair, for which they would happily give their lives. The two changelings are both becomers who change their form depending upon the needs of their assigned task. Their expertise lies in seeking out information important to the Spy Master and reporting back to her.
