Kleris Gerlach is an Ashbound human who sees the influence and reliance on House Vadalis to be dangerous. While he personally believes Vadalis' experiments in magebreeding are breaking the personal order, he relies on persuading the farmers and ranchers with more acceptable facts. He points to the high up front and maintenance costs associated with magebred animals and the vulnerability associated with that dependence.
