Thalingard

Stronghold

The home of Thrane’s royalty is Thalingard. Historically, the castle has been renamed by the current ruler, but since the church took over it has remained named after the last king of Thrane. The castle’s spires are visible throughout the city, rivaling the Cathedral of the Silver Flame for height. Since the transfer of power to the church, the castle halls are mostly empty except for when Queen Diani ir’Wynarn is hosting some diplomatic function. Since the end of the war Diani has preferred to maintain Silvercliff Castle as her primary residence for both herself and her family.

Among the lesser-known treasures of Thalingard are the gardens on the roof of the castle. Started long before the war, they’ve secretly been a long-running experiment by Thrane’s regents in harnessing the Irian manifest zone to produce an elixir of life. Currently, Diani has been happy to let the elven botanist Tokorin Flemton (he/him) oversee the gardens as he has for the past two hundred years.

It is customary for the imperial ruler of Thrane to name the royal palace after himself (or herself). Thalin was the last of Thrane’s true monarchs, and thus the palace retains his name. Thalingard has narrow spires that reach higher than any other structure in the city, including the Cathedral. Although stocked with vigilant warforged guards, it feels strangely empty and neglected. It clings to the west side of the city’s central plinth, its sheer walls and precarious balconies looming high above the rest of the city

Thalingard serves as the primary residence for Thrane’s royal regent, Diani ir'Wynarn. Every few months, Diani leaves the city and retreats to Silvercliff Castle farther north. The Council of Cardinals pay little heed to her coming and going unless they need her for some diplomatic function. Diani keeps Thalingard clean and ready for visiting dignitaries and important gatherings, but she considers Silvercliff Castle her “nest.”

Thrane’s regents have always lived in this massive fortress in the center of the city. Thalingard is a great fortress with tall spires. Its balconies offer a stunning view of the city unfolding below.

Thalingard takes its name from Thrane’s last king. Custom dictates that the castle’s name change with its ruler, but Thrane has not had a true king since Thalin, and so the old name remains. The castle houses the blood regent Diani ir’Wynarn and a detachment of warforged sentries. Because the monarchy is no longer relevant, the castle is a much a symbol as the regent.
