In 497 YK, Melysse Miron challenged the Keeper of the Flame for control of the
church of Thrane. Born a peasant. Melysse claimed that she had been visited by
Tira Miron, the Voice of the Silver Flame, who revealed that Melysse was her direct
descendant and the rightful Keeper. She challenged many of the existing
doctrines of the church, claiming it had strayed from its proper path.
Initially, divination magic failed to prove or disprove her story. but
eventually the truth was revealed: Melysse was the chosen hand of the Shadow
in the Flame—the demon lord bound beneath Flamekeep. Melysse and her followers
were brought to justice after a brief but bloody conflict, but the Council of
Cardinals chose not to kill her, as church diviners believed if she were slain
the dark voice would find a new agent. Instead, she was sent to the Stone Ward
of Dreadhold, there to remain for eternity.
Melysse has been held in Dreadhold for over five hundred years and has never
been revived. She is a skilled orator and experienced cleric on her own, but
within the confines of Flamekeep she gains access to the power of her dark
lord—making her extremely dangerous. The church, meanwhile, has stricken all
mention of Melysse from their records and only the highest-ranking clergy know
of her existence.

Most people in Thrane know of the Time of Two Keepers, the greatest schism in
the history of the Church It ended in a brutal, bloody conflict followed, and
Melysse Miron was defeated and put to the sword.
That’s what the public believe, anyway. The truth is restricted to the Council
of Flamekeep. Jaela hasn’t even been told yet, though she will be in time.
Melysse Miron was not destroyed. Keeper Danth feared that if she killed
Melysse, Bel Shalor would simply choose another to invest its strength in,
just as the Flame chooses new Keepers. As such, Melysse was petrified and sent
to Dreadhold, where she remains in the Stone Ward.
The Church continues to pay for her imprisonment to this day. Nobody could
really say what she would do if she were to escape, but it’s likely she would
make another attempt on the Church. Melysse Miron is an agent of Bel Shalor,
the most powerful mortal agent the overlord has ever had, and she revels in
doing its work.
There are a few ways that Melysse might end up being released. The Church
could stop paying, causing House Kundarak to release her. Another option is
for the Whispering Flame cult, or any group of Tarnished, to stage a prison
break. It would be appropriate for such a group to mislead a group of
well-meaning player characters into the deed. Knowledge of Melysse’s continued
existence is a secret, and so the Tarnished could tell any lie necessary.
Once released, Melysse likely wouldn’t act against the Church immediately.
Instead, she would lay low for a while, learn about the state of the world,
and try to gather support. Likely, she would attempt to subvert the Pure Flame
in Thaliost. As there is already a vocal group of Purists pushing for Prefect
Dariznu to march on Flamekeep, Melysse could be the spark that ignites the
powder keg.
Just like Keeper Jaela, Melysse Miron is more powerful when in proximity to
Flamekeep. Perhaps she may be more powerful than the young Keeper. Outside of
Flamekeep, she is almost certainly more powerful than Jaela. Melysse is a
dangerous individual regardless of where she is, but within Flamekeep she
would be a force that few on Eberron could rival.
