Wyrmwatch

Village

A thriving prospecting town in Hope, Wyrmwatch was established by Cyran refugees. Although far smaller than New Cyre in Breland, its people are proud of what they have built. The independent community is led by Elder Nevillom, a veteran and evangelist of the Silver Flame. Nevillom’s courage and passionate sermons help sustain the people of Wyrmwatch in difficult times.

The largest of the refugee villages scattered throughout the region of Q’barra called Hope, Wyrmwatch has remained relatively intact for almost three years. Perhaps that’s why it continues to grow; its more or less permanent nature attracts those arriving in Q’barra who aren’t interested in the ideals of New Galifar, as well as those from other villages looking for a safer place to live. Elder Nevillom (LN male human, fighter 2/cleric 3 Silver Flame), a veteran of the Last War and a Silver Flame evangelist, serves as the nominal leader of the village. His combat experience and fiery preaching style make him colorful, commanding, and dangerous. He holds to many of the more puritannical tenets of the faith—doctrines that have largely been abandoned by the Silver Flame temples in the Five Nations.

The largest settlement in Hope, Wyrmwatch is only three years old. Walled in stone on the rocky hills above a fertile plain, the settlement has endured attack from Valenar elves, kobolds, and hostile Unknown, even as it continues to grow on the strength of local mining and agriculture. Wyrmwatch is populated by settlers who prefer the frontier life to the ideals of New Galifar, as well as by folk displaced by the destruction of smaller settlements.

Wyrmwatch is a theocracy—a bastion of radical [organisation:112978|Silver Flame] practitioners within Q’barra. The town’s leader is Elder Wedon Nevillom, a zealot and veteran of the Last War. He and his followers hold to their church’s puritanical and xenophobic values. As such, no lizardfolk are allowed in Wyrmwatch, and dragon born are treated with suspicion.

The region of Hope in western Q’barra is full of small prospecting towns built in the last few years, hoping to profit from the dragonshard boom. The town of Wyrmwatch, founded in 995 YK, was established by refugees from Cyre and is currently one of the largest settlements in Hope. The community’s leader, Elder Wedon Nevillom (male human priest, he/him), is a veteran of the Last War and a priest of the Silver Flame. He has fostered a strong sense of community in the town.

Wyrmwatch, like every settlement in the region, has been the target of aggression from both the lizardfolk of the Masvirik’uala and the Poison Dusk. Elder Nevillom has managed to mostly keep morale high. The town continues to thrive despite the difficult situation, but they are pressed from all sides by hostile forces. Led by a priest of the Silver Flame, and with the Church’s values at its heart, Wyrmwatch could be pivotal to the ongoing hostilities. Currently, the prospectors don’t realize the significance of the dawn or dusk shards or the consequences of taking them out of Q’barra.

Adventure Hook: The Cold Sun Tribes

The lizardfolk don’t see the settlers of Wyrmwatch as any different from the Poison Dusk, who also seek to remove dawn shards from Q’barra. The lizardfolk are ruthless when they raid the town’s mines, leaving no survivors and destroying what mining equipment they find. Though they have good reason for doing this they have been unable to communicate the risk to the settlers. If someone could explain the lizardfolk’s aggression to Elder Nevillom, he could be instrumental in resolving the hostilities. The lizardfolk don’t understand that the settlers are unaware that they are weakening Masvirik’s prison. In this way, the Church of the Silver Flame and the Masvirik’uala are aligned. They just don’t understand that they are on the same side in this conflict.

This is where the player characters come in. The lizardfolk have difficulty communicating with the settlers of Q’barra, both in New Galifar and in Hope, and they need people who can act as translators. Elder Nevillom would almost certainly champion their cause were they aware of what is at stake, but how might other communities react?

It’s entirely possible that greed would win out over self-preservation. The settlers already view the lizardfolk as superstitious, so perhaps mining and prospecting would continue regardless of the threat. House Tharashk has already called for New Galifar to go to war with the lizardfolk, and escalating tensions in Hope only add fuel to this fire.

If Elder Nevillom is made aware of Masvirik and the Poison Dusk, and of the threat they represent, it’s possible he would request the support of Flamekeep or Newthrone to put a stop to the dragonshard mining. Jaela would almost certainly support Elder Nevillom and the lizardfolk, but how might King Sebastes react?

Adventure Hook: Stormhorn Dragonborn

Wyrmwatch has had few dealings with the nearest dragonborn clan, the Stormhorns, but the interactions they have had have been hostile. One of the Stormhorn elders, Mishva Garodya, has been pushing for the dragonborn to declare war on the settlers and remove them from the dragonborns’ ancestral lands. For the moment, the elders of the clan have rejected the idea, but Mishva has enough followers that there have been skirmishes with the nearby settlers.

Wyrmwatch is a small settlement, and almost certainly wouldn’t survive a focused assault. Aggression from the dragonborn has been gradually ramping up, with Mishva’s followers becoming more and more brazen. Wyrmwatch needs heroes, both to physically defend them from attacks, but also to try and facilitate communication with the dragonborn.

Mishva Garodya Stormhorn has dreams of a restored dragonborn empire, and Wyrmwatch would just be the first of many conquests if she got her way. Until now, she hasn’t had enough support to claim leadership of her clan, but perhaps war with New Galifar and Hope is on the horizon.
