The Pit of Five Sorrows

Natural Feature

One of the most infamous sites in all of Eberron is the prison of Tiamat, the Daughter of Khyber and an overlord of godlike power in her own right. Legend tells that the Pit of Five Sorrows is the single deepest chasm in Khyber that doesn’t eventually lead to any other plane. The great dome of force that prevents entry glows with the slowly cycling chromatic hues of the dragonshard below it that imprisons Tiamat’s essence. In addition to Tiamat, the pit holds other powerful entities, as well as deadly secrets, and it is the most strongly guarded location on Argonnessen. Guarding the pit is a great honor, and many dragons volunteer for this duty, even with the knowledge that they will be executed at the completion of their tour to prevent the spread of Tiamat’s corrupting essence.

The most infamous site in Argonnessen, this is the prison of Tiamat, the Daughter of Khyber. A dome of force covers the top of this cavernous well, with garrison aeries carved into the walls of the abyssal shaft. Shifting light rises from the bottom—the pulsing colors of the immense Khyber shard that holds the spirit of Tiamat, slowly shifting through the ten colors of true dragons. Even in her slumber, Tiamat’s mind is so powerful that anyone who passes beyond the dome of force can feel her presence. It is assumed that no dragon can resist her touch forever. A dragon must volunteer for guard duty in the Pit, and when his tour of duty is complete, he is executed, to ensure that his spirit has remained pure. It is a one-way mission, but those who survive it untainted and accept execution with dignity bring great honor to their flights.

The Pit of Five Sorrows holds many secrets, and it is one of the most carefully warded and secured locations on Eberron. An effort to penetrate the Pit should be a challenge for advanced epic-level characters.
