Migrating an Existing Character to the New PHB's Rules
The PHB 2024 is bringing significant changes. While many of our campaigns are long-term, some players may not want to be locked into the old rules or are eager to try out the new features. Migrating an existing character isn't straightforward, and despite claims of backward compatibility, there are underlying issues that need addressing. To simplify the process and minimize concerns, the following guidelines will be followed:
Class
- You will receive the updated version of your class (if available) and gain the new features while losing the old ones.
- You cannot change your class during migration. If you wish to change your class, you must create a new character.
Subclass
- Your subclass can change only if:
- You are switching to a subclass that is in the PHB 2024 or a homebrew one.
- You agree to lose any additional feature/item/benefit tied to your old subclass (e.g., an item that boosted your Channel Divinity as a Cleric or a boon that enhanced your Evocation spells as a Wizard). There will be no replacements for these losses.
Other Class Features (e.g., Invocations, Maneuvers)
- You can change these features as you wish.
Race (Now Called Species)
- Your race will be updated to the new version. You will gain the new bonuses it provides and lose the old ones.
- The exception is your Ability Score Increases (ASI), which you keep, as you will not receive the ASI from the new Backgrounds/Races.
- You cannot change your race during migration. If you wish to change your race, you must create a new character.
- No swapping around attributes.
Feats (Including Fighting Styles)
- You can change your feats if desired.
- Any feats that no longer meet the requirements must be changed.
Spells
- You will receive the updated versions of your spells.
Synergies
- You can change your synergies as you wish; new synergies will be available.
Proficiencies
- You can reallocate your proficiencies according to your class, background, and race rules.
Backgrounds
- You will lose your old background, along with everything it provided.
- You will select a new background (official or homebrew), ignoring the ASI improvement, since you are keeping the stats from your previous race.
- You will receive an Origin Feat and the listed proficiencies. No additional equipment or gold will be provided.
Changes will be happening after the PHB arrives (end of September)
