Spells of the Department of Malignant Mysteries

This is an entry used to collect all the spells stored in some form at the Department of Malignant Mysteries.

Agents of the department typically have access to most spells presented therein -- any that they do not will be noted otherwise.

The Department of Malignant Mysteries officially supports two forms of casting: runic and Vancian. Where applicable, a spell will be detailed with instructions on how to cast in both forms.

Runic Casting

Runic casting involves drawing the correct rune for the spell, then focusing one's magic into it.

The Department of Malignant Mysteries arms its agents with modified versions of the runes for safety, typically limiting energy spending, directing targeting, and other fail-safes, but the base form of the rune -- the one that actually represents the spell -- is always demonstrated in the archives. As such, agents of the Department of Malignant Magics are able to recognise the runes in the wild even if other users decorate the runes differently.

Note: for easier reference, most spells belonging to the Department of Malignant Mysteries are represented with an icon. These icons are for organisational purposes only, and do not represent the actual shape of the rune!

Vancian Casting

Vancian casting involves memorising the theory behind the spell, and spending one's memory to cast it. Memorising a spell in such a way is called "preparing" it. The department typically limits the amount of spells an agent can prepare to three maximum for health concerns.

The department's spells are written with "variation points" all through the spell, which instruct the agent to make up a variation therein; this is typically a colour, a number, or some other data. The variation points don't play into the spell at all when it comes to casting them, but using them, an agent can remember multiple variations of the same spell, allowing them to prepare the same spell multiple times without forgetting it all.
