Mova

Goddess of Death

Mova, known diversely across cultures and realms, reigns as the compassionate Goddess of Death in Iozaria. Her domain extends over Grave and Twilight, where she tenderly oversees the transition of souls from the material plane to their destined afterlife. Embodying Neutral Good, Mova is neither a harvester of souls nor a somber figure of fear but a gentle guide offering passage and peace.

The orcs of the north revere her as Moreshth, the Soul Taker, a title that echoes her solemn duty rather than her benevolent nature, while others simply call her The Raven Queen. Through her union with Elios, the God of Life, the spirits of their offspring become Aasimar, infusing mortal beings with celestial grace from the moment of their conception.

Mova's essential role commences when life ceases, as she arrives to present the departed with a profound choice: to accept a return to the mortal coil via resurrection magics or to embark on a journey to the plane of their deity. Those lacking a deity's patronage find themselves in Hades, while strong-willed souls may navigate the Astral Sea, possibly intersecting paths with travelers between worlds.

In cases where Mova's presence is delayed, the living can invoke her through sacred rites, ensuring the departed are not left to wander and potentially devolve into malevolent specters. Such ceremonies are not mere tradition; they are vital to guaranteeing a soul's peace and are integral to Iozaria's funerary customs.

The influence of Mova is immediate for those recently passed; within a minute's breadth, she can easily coax the spirit back to life. Beyond that fleeting moment, a soul ventures into the Astral Sea, awaiting Mova's guidance for resurrection or transcendence.

The devotion to Mova is profound, with her clerics serving as both spiritual guides and shepherds of souls. They are the mortal instruments through which Mova expresses her will, ensuring that every soul receives its due attention and that the cycles of life and death maintain their sacred equilibrium. These faithful stewards of the afterlife perform funerals not as mere customs but as essential rites to honor the dead and affirm Mova's promise of guidance in the world beyond.

She has shown herself to several members of The Flock during their travels.

Mova's duties

When a creature in the world of Iozaria dies they need to be guided to the plane of their patron, which is what is the duty of Mova. Creatures who perish on the material plane gets visited by Mova not long after the passing, and is often given a choice of being able to return to their world by effect of a resurrection-type spell, or they can choose to move on to the plane of their deity. Any creature that does not have a strong connection to a deity end up in Hades, but a strong willed soul, often those with unfinished business can roam the Astral Sea for as long as it desires. Visitors to the Astral Sea may even encounter some of these lost souls if they are lucky enough, giving a chance to meet their fallen friends if luck allows it.

If somehow a soul is not visited by Mova in time, they might be affected by an outside influence and trapped in the body. Doing a ceremony can call Mova to the body to give the soul it's rest. If a soul is trapped in a body for too long it can become restless and release itself as a hostile entity, such as a ghost, banshee, or if Mova permits, rise again as a revenant to finish it's last mission. Most funerals are done to make sure that the soul is given its choice by Mova.

Any creature that have been dead for no more than a minute simply needs a simple nudge from Mova to be jolted back to life, but longer than that, the soul departs the body and enters the Astral Sea, to wait for guidance from Mova, to either be asked back to their body if there is a resurrection ritual, or the soul can choose to move on.
