Elvish legend says that the first Clanks were crafted by the titan Prometheus, a gift of ingenuity shown to the gods. But Zeus, ever envious of Prometheus's creations, grew jealous. In a fit of divine rage, he shattered many of the unique "types" Prometheus had so carefully designed. He allowed a few to survive, but only on the condition that they would serve the new race he had just created, the Elves, who were perhaps born from the inspiration of Prometheus's masterful work. This is how the Elves explain their divine right to rule and the servitude of the Clanks.
The Clanks, however, tell a different story. Long ago, the fleshlings, or mortals, sought to honor the gods by creating the first of their kind, the magnificent Muses Machina. These towering figures, each a work of art, were brought to life by a divine spark gifted from the gods. So potent was this gift that there was an abundance of the divine energy. Not wanting to waste such a blessing, the fleshlings began to create more Clanks, not as tributes to the gods, but as tireless servants to make their own lives easier.
For a time, the Clanks worked in harmony with the fleshlings, filling countless roles and making life better for all. But the fleshlings, with their short lifespans, began to fear the longevity of the Clanks. They saw a future where Clanks, with their seemingly endless lives, would grow in power and choose to no longer serve. Driven by this fear, they crafted cruel regulator collars to shackle the Clanks, keeping them in line and preventing them from reaching their full potential. Some Clanks submitted to this fate, while others chose a different path, rising up to fight for their freedom.
When they were first encountered by the Kashalite Empire in the reign of Maximus Antonius Glaber, many years ago, their appearance, demeanor and, well, nearly everything about them was a shock to the Empire, but as a smallish band they were easily defeated. Because of their uniqueness and ferocity in combat they were brought to the capital. Now, some 20 or so Clanks are enslaved by the Empire, a status they feel they have earned by being defeated.
Most seek to gain their freedom through the gladiatorial arena, but others work in menial tasks.
As a people, they seem shattered and defeated.
