Dwarven civilization is centered in the Highwall Peaks. Once united in the massive Dwarven Empire, the flood of orcs racing to the surface from the underworld proved too much for the Empire. The Dwarven kings, cut off from the former Capital City of Kelethorp, began declaring their independence and forswore their ties with the Dwarven High King. Dwarves have ventured throughout the world, however, and may be found anywhere (although they've tended to stick to Orthegra, due to their dislike of flying or sailing).
It became commonly held among non-dwarves that those dwarves who dwelt deep beneath the crust and lived without seeing the sun were a separate species, a dwarf subrace. Since they were sometimes derisively called “cave-adapted” by surface dwarves, that term was appropriated for naming this supposed subrace. From the dialect of the dwarf language, these “cave-adapted” dwarves were named duergar.
