Ibis’s Infinite Codex

Ibis’s Infinite Codex

Wondrous Item, very rare

This finely crafted tome, dedicated to Ibis, the Keeper of Knowledge, is a prized artifact among wizards and scholars. Its black leather cover is embossed with an ibis feather within an open eye, and its silver-gilded pages resist fire, water, and the passage of time. The book seems to hum faintly when opened, as if whispering the wisdom of ages past.

Properties

  • Endless Arcane Record: The tome contains 1,000 pages upon which a wizard can inscribe spells without expending the usual 50 gp per spell level material cost. Spells transcribed into the book never fade and can be erased only by the writer’s intent or powerful magic.
  • Unbreakable Knowledge: The book is immune to fire, water, and aging. It cannot be torn or destroyed except by a wish spell or similar divine intervention.
  • Ward of Ibis: The book is locked to its rightful owner. If another creature attempts to read or write within it, the text becomes unintelligible. If stolen, it emits a 30-foot burst of radiant energy (4d6 radiant damage, DC 16 Dexterity save for half) and teleports to a secure location within 1 mile, often returning to its last known resting place.

Ritual of Inscription

A wizard who gains possession of Ibis’s Infinite Codex may spend one hour performing a ritual to bind it to their knowledge. This allows them to transfer all spells from their existing spellbook(s) into the Codex, though it does not consume the original book.

Rarity & Creation

  • Market Price: 12,500 gp
  • Creation Cost: 6,250 gp, 13 days
  • Crafting Requirements: Craft Wondrous Item, Secret Page, Leomund’s Secret Chest

This tome is never found randomly with spells already inscribed, as it is a vessel of earned wisdom, not preordained knowledge.
