After winding up craggy mountain peaks from the Black Carriage Crossroads, the road to Castle Ravenloft stopped suddenly at an awe-inspiring set of gates. Built of stone in a similar style to the Gates of Barovia, the Gates of Ravenloft dwarfed their cousins in stature, and twin turrets of stone raised above its impossibly high walls. Two enormous statues of armed guardians flanked the gates, bearing noble longswords, though their heads lay among the weeds at their feet.

Depending on the conditions of the land, a view of a castle behind the gates sometimes came into view. The massive gates were permanently left open, and beyond them was a road leading up the castle grounds. Once past a drawbridge of shored-up wooden beams that stretched across a chasm, a visitor could reach Castle Ravenloft.
