Veskan

Veskan of the Black Coil

Veskan of the Black Coil

Veskan is old. Not ceremonially old, not respected-old. He is the kind of old that comes from surviving things that were supposed to kill you.

He serves as a senior handler and mentor at the Black Coil Hall in Sealed Row. If you deal with demon hunters in Kalorand, you will eventually deal with Veskan.

He does not wear insignia. He does not sit in command chairs. He moves slowly, speaks precisely, and watches everything.

What People Know

Veskan has trained more demon hunters than anyone still alive.

Most of them are dead.

No one can name a possession, curse, or manifestation Veskan has not encountered in some form. When he listens to a story, he does not interrupt. When he finally speaks, it is usually to say what part of it will matter later.

He is tolerated by the Church because the alternative is worse.

Personality and Demeanor

Veskan is calm without being gentle.

He does not raise his voice. He does not threaten. He does not reassure. He is not interested in bravery or faith. He is interested in outcomes.

He treats adventurers with professional respect, not admiration. He assumes anyone still alive has already paid for it.

If he warns you away from something, he does not explain twice.

Why Adventurers Seek Him Out

You go to Veskan when:

  • Clerics say “the rites failed”

  • The thing you killed did not stay dead

  • Something followed you back

  • A location behaves incorrectly

  • You want to know whether an expedition is survivable

Veskan does not speculate. He cross-references.

He may tell you:

  • What kind of threat you are dealing with

  • What made the last attempt fail

  • What symptoms mean you should leave immediately

  • What will get someone else killed instead of you

He will not tell you what you want to hear.

What He Offers

Even to non–demon hunters, Veskan can provide:

  • Threat classification based on firsthand precedent

  • Behavioral patterns of curses, spirits, and manifestations

  • Warnings about locations that escalate unpredictably

  • Referrals to records, apothecaries, or specialists

  • Quiet confirmation that something is not normal

His information is never free. Payment may be coin, supplies, names, or silence. He prefers herbs.

For Demon Hunters

If you are one of his hunters, Veskan is the one who:

  • Decides when you are fit to deploy again

  • Adjusts your herbal regimen

  • Pulls you back when you are pushing too far

  • Records your survival without celebration

He does not promise longevity.

He promises honesty.

Reputation

Among adventurers:

“If Veskan tells you it’s survivable, believe him.
If he tells you to leave, leave.”

Among clerics:

“He knows too much, but he keeps it contained.”

Among demon hunters:

“He remembers the dead so we don’t have to.”
