Languages

Broadly speaking, languages in Seniogum tend to be ill defined, the blurring of dialects often meaning a true, distinct language is impossible to codify. As such, academic practice is to group languages into families and then define down into dialects. Even this is not perfect however, as even native speakers of certain languages may be unable to converse with other speakers of other languages in their family.

For the purpose of the campaign, all the languages below are distinct and identifiable, but knowing certain languages will grant an understanding of others in their family. When determining how you understand languages, you are able to understand languages that have one degree of separation from your mother tongue, (see Character Creation Companion), and are in your language group. For Root Languages, the rule only applies from the root, so a Laurum speaker can understand Darmish, but not vice versa. There are also some exceptions which are highlighted, as Resalan, for example, cannot always understand Floralist Incantation by design of the successor language.

Languages marked with a ‘*’ are completely extinct and have no, (or very few) native or fluent speakers.
