Crafting a Compelling Character Backstory

If you're completely new or a veteran - this guide will give you the needed tools to craft a constructive backstory that would help us both create memorable stories.

Why do we need a Backstory?

A backstory serves two main purposes:

  1. Roleplaying Tool: It helps you understand your character's motivations, fears, and past experiences, enriching your roleplaying.
  2. GM Resource: It provides the game master (GM) with hooks to tie your character into the campaign.

Key Considerations for Your Backstory:

  • Motivation for Adventure: Give your character a compelling reason to embark on adventures and work with others. Without it, nothing else matters.
  • Clarity and Length: Keep your backstory concise and easy to reference. A page or two is more than enough.
  • Appropriate Level: Ensure your backstory aligns with your character's level and the game's progression.
  • Collaborate with Your GM: Make sure your backstory fits the campaign's setting, themes, and any plans the GM shared with you for this game.

Essential Elements:

  • Background: Where did your character grow up? What was their family like?
  • Defining Events: What significant experiences shaped your character's life and led them to become an adventurer?
  • Motivations and Goals: What drives your character? What do they fear? What do they desire?
  • NPC Connections: Identify important NPCs from your character's past who could play a role in the campaign.
  • GM Hooks: You may provide specific plot points or mysteries related to your character's backstory that the GM can incorporate.

Our New Character should help you touch on all these points.

Following these guidelines and the template will help create a backstory that enhances your roleplaying experience and adds depth to your character's journey.
