Their fur varies in shades from ash gray to brown, blending seamlessly with their environment. Their eyes, often sharp and observant, range from bright amber to deep black, allowing them to see well in low-light conditions. Ratfolk have elongated snouts, whiskers, and large, sensitive ears that contribute to their acute senses. They possess dexterous, clawed hands and feet, aiding them in their underground movements.

History:

The history of the Ratfolk traces back centuries, intertwining with the Vache Kingdom's evolution. Their existence in vast subterranean colonies beneath cities and towns has been a well-kept secret from the general populace. Their society revolves around complex clan structures, where leaders vie for dominance, creating a significant political force in the underworld. Ratfolk have occasionally attempted expansion beyond their territories but often faced resistance, particularly in the Iron Isles, where they live under the control of ruling Vampires.

Society:

Ratfolk society is structured around clans, each led by a Chieftain or Chieftess who rises to power through prowess and cunning. The clans fiercely compete for resources and territory, maintaining a significant presence in the underground realms. While they predominantly operate under the cover of darkness, many Ratfolk integrate into human society as soldiers, thieves, or spies, utilizing their adaptability and stealth to serve various purposes.

Racial Names:

Ratfolk names often reflect their cunning, adaptability, and their connection to the underworld. Examples might include Skitter, Whisper, Scuttle, Ashfur, or Shadowtail.

Racial Feat:

  • Ability Score Increase: Dexterity and Intelligence scores increase by 2.
  • Age: Ratfolk reach adulthood around 16 years and live up to 60 years on average.
  • Alignment: Ratfolk display a wide range of alignments, but they often lean towards Chaotic Neutral or Lawful Evil tendencies, reflecting their cunning and self-interested nature.
  • Size: Ratfolk are similar in size to humans, ranging from 4 to 5 feet tall, with a slender, agile build.
  • Speed: Base walking speed is 30 feet and a climbing speed of 40 feet.
  • Languages: They are fluent in Common and Undercommon. Some Ratfolk may also possess knowledge of thieves' cant or secret languages.
  • Vision: Ratfolk possess Darkvision, enabling them to see in low-light conditions within their underground habitats.
