The Scroll of Life Drain is a powerful and dark magical item, often associated with necromancy and the undead. The origin of the spell scroll comes from the Institute of Mortality where the masters created the first Scroll of Life Drain, using the souls of the dead to power its dark magic. Over time, it became taught to the most skilled warlocks within the Institute. It has since become known throughout the world.

However, the use of the Scroll of Life Drain is frowned upon by most reputable magic users and is often considered taboo. It is viewed as a perversion of the natural order and a violation of the sanctity of life. Some even believe that using the scroll will result in a curse or other form of punishment from the gods or other powerful entities. Despite the dangers and taboo nature of the Scroll of Life Drain, it remains a coveted item for those who seek power at any cost. Its dark allure has tempted many a mage or wizard down the path of necromancy, leading to their ultimate downfall. Some mages who acquire a scroll generally keep as a last resort.

Effect: The caster targets a single creature within 60 feet. The target must succeed a Constitution saving throw (DC 16), or the target takes 8d8 necrotic damage, and the caster regains hit points equal to the damage dealt. However, using the spell has a price. The caster gains a level of exhaustion.

Crafting Requirements

The crafting requirements for the Scroll of Life Drain are as follows:

  1. A vial of blood from a sentient being. The blood must be fresh and drawn by the crafter themselves.
  2. A diamond worth no less than 1,000 gold pieces.
  3. A black candle made from the wax of a cursed tree.
  4. A sacrifice of a living creature that possesses strong life force, such as a unicorn or dragon. The sacrifice must be made at the moment of the scroll's completion.

The process of crafting the scroll is said to be cruel and haunting, as the crafter must perform a ritual that involves draining the life force of the creature being sacrificed. This is done by slowly torturing the creature over a period of an hour, causing it extreme pain and suffering. Once the life force is fully drained, the crafter must immediately use it to imbue the scroll with the power of the Life Drain spell. The ritual is widely considered to be an abomination, and the use of the Scroll of Life Drain is strictly forbidden in most civilized societies. Those caught using the scroll are often hunted down and executed for their crimes against life itself.
