The Stormheart is a volatile, crackling sphere of condensed lightning—veins of raw plasma race across its surface like the nerves of something divine in pain. It pulses with unnatural rhythm, humming like thunder caught in a bottle.

It is said to have been created by Emilia Weathers, a young and naive sorceress who braved the skies above the Dormond Sea during a storm the size of the entire country of Rivermond. Tales tell that she travelled into the eye of the tempest aboard a sky-bound skiff and bottled its heart. When she returned to the city of Rivermond, the sea fell still. The skies cleared. And in her hands, the storm lived on—trapped in a sphere of arcane crystal. How she lost it is unknown but many collectors have been looking for it.

Properties:

  • Unstable Power (Dormant): While carried, the Stormheart hums with power. You gain resistance to lightning damage. Additionally, you can cast Shocking Grasp at will (no components required).
  • Storm Sense: You can sense approaching storms or charged magical energy within 10 miles. You always know the direction and distance to the nearest thunderstorm.
  • Controlled Discharge (1/Week):
As an action, the wielder may release a tamed burst of lightning from the sphere. This creates a 20-foot radius, 60-foot high cylinder centered on a point you can see within 120 feet.
Each creature in the area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 8d10 lightning damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. Creatures wearing metal armor or standing in water roll with disadvantage.
  • Final Unleashing (One Use Only):
As an action, the sphere can be fully shattered, releasing its core. This causes a city-block-level tempest:
  • All creatures in a 300-foot radius must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw.
  • On a failure, they take 100 lightning damage, are blasted 60 feet away, and are blinded for 1 minute.
  • On a success, they take half damage, and are not blinded or moved.
  • All structures in the area are destroyed as if struck by an arcane hurricane.
  • Once used this way, the Stormheart is destroyed.
  • Volatile Curse:
If you are reduced to 0 hit points while carrying Stormheart, roll a d20. On a roll of 1, the sphere shatters automatically, triggering the Final Unleashing.
