Olde King Tohm

Cats were not native to the Inis. One day, the Ardruid Unknown decided to create a creature that could quietly and subtly deliver her information from various households and streets. Thus, the common housecat came to be. However, one of the first, if not the very first, of these cats closely watched the Ardruids themselves. He slowly learned many of their secrets and was finally able to work magic as freely as they did.

When the Wounding of the Good Son transpired this cat swept up a few of his favored brethren and fled to Otherworld. There he taught them how to change their shapes and raised them to a higher state of cognizance. This First of the cait-sidhe is asserted to be Olde King Tohm himself, although, that would make him an exceptionally old cat even by cait-sidhe standards. It also calls into question the veracity of cait-sidhe as feyfolk since they seem to stem from a created species.

The religion surrounding the Olde King is considered a cult not because it isn't the most prominent or because its illegal, but rather that so few Cait-Sidhe actively become true priests that its difficult to consider a religion. In places other than Ulthar, it meets the criteria as normal.

Domains - Life, Trickery.

Symbols - A large, coal-grey cat's paw.

Antithesis - Disturbing the Olde King or his plans, such as they are.9fd92d7e-3548-43cb-9dde-13e4e6eec19b.png

Afterlife - Stories in the Court

Cait-Sidhe can't be bothered to look too deeply into this myth. As far as anyone knows, Olde King Tohm remains in Ulthar where his children bring him stories and secrets to pass the time of eternity. Its said that the Cait-Sidhe worship him as a creator-god, but if they do, it remains a quiet worship as the Cait-Sidhe neither proselytize nor do they hold festivals to him.

However, Cait-Sidhe do hold the belief that when they take their final nap, they arrive at the king's side where he keeps them as living repositories of the stories and tales of their lives. Every so often that same curiosity and wanderlust flares up in an "olde spirit" and they may ask Olde King Tohm to fling their awen into a new body so they can bring him new stories (and alleviate their own boredom).

Historical Impact

Olde King Tohm is the progenitor god, or cat, depending on your point of view. As such, the Cait-Sidhe view him as both a deity, a monarch and a father figure. However, outside of creating the Cait-Sidhe, the Olde King doesn't seem to concern himself with the mortal realms and has thus far, left little impact upon it.

Variations

Thieves! - Da Ji, Mistress of Foxes, was the first of the Cáo Tinh and tantamount to the Cáo Tinh version of Olde King Tohm or even the Ardruid Brigit. It is said she tip-toed into Ulthar, curious of the secrets its master was keeping. There she discovered the secret of the Taghaim and stole it to bring to the lesser fox spirits of Otherworld.

When Olde King Tohm discovered this, he began a war to destroy the newly-made Cáo Tinh, forcing them to flee Otherworld. It is said they left by unknown means and the facts surrounding their arrival in Samara Strima are both debated and unknown.

Art

Despite the secretive nature with which Olde King Tohm seemingly obtained the ability to create or uplift other Cait-Sidhe, it never seems to be considered theft. The Olde King appears in daoine art as a fairly normal cat who always accompanies the Ardruid Brigit in the various paintings and reliefs that bear his image.

Many speculate this was always the end goal, others believe that Brigit grew so fond of her feline creations that she gave Olde King Tohm the ability to carry his people into the future.
