World Weep Opening History
The Grand Admiral of Bloodcove at the time of the First Hero's March was an elderly man whose name has been lost to history. He did not serve a combative role in the march due to a number of significant injuries, but instead handled transportation and logistics. Seeing the birth of the world weep and the massive expansion of this eldritch point of space from the horizon of Kallas Lake, he was one of the few true survivors of the First Hero's March, and sailed his boat immediately down the Sellen River and down to the Inner Sea, to return to the City he swore his lifelong oath to protect, condeming many adventuerers to their grim fates. The small population of Bloodcove welcomed him warmly and sang drunken songs of camaraderie, but upon hearing his damning story of what was to come, nearly the entire town sailed away in the following night.
Age of Collapse History — Era of Froghemoths
Due to its small population, Bloodcove did not suffer from Mathesis’ direct wrath as she rained destruction upon the world after the failure of the Heroes’ March. Instead, the seafaring city-state found its share of troubles from the loss of mighty adventurers and capable captains that left it vulnerable to threats both natural and monstrous. Froghemoths and other creatures of the depths, once culled regularly by daring citizens, grew out of control and rampaged unchecked to take countless lives. Without trade to rely on, and with the surrounding jungles becoming increasingly deadly, Bloodcove would be abandoned completely by its inhabitants long before the end of Mathesis’ millennium.
Age of Renewal History
Bloodcove, as it was, is no more. The location, with its natural deep and shallow ports between the Fever Sea and the inner heart of the Mwgani Expanse, has birthed a new trade port owned primarily by the Free Captains and Merchant Princes of The Shackles. However, it is no more than that, as the simple fort has not had the time to grow into a city proper.
Government
The rulers of Bloodcove currently are a Merchant Prince and Free Captain married couple called the Thornwick Family. They hold absolute authority over their employees and crew, and run a strict set of rules to deter conflict with outsiders. The culture of Bloodcove is primarily as a Shackles satellite port, and its low population of only a few permanent residents and buildings means it serves as rather low maintenance.
Points of Interest
- The Thornwick Manor is easily the largest point of interest, standing just outside the fort's stone walls, and practically rivaling the rest of the port in size. It has many gardens that require their own dedicated servant quarters and small houses to fit the staff of the manor, whose population once again rivals the rest of the port.
- The Taverns and Inns have nearly satirical names like the Bloodrot, the Pirate Hook, and Swamp Bloom. The township as a whole seems to embody a rambunctious population that wears its lot in life with pride. Despite being mainly composed of pirates, these crews seem more light-hearted in nature than the others of the Shackles, perhaps why they ended up in this spot in the middle of nowhere rather than the active raiding lifestyle of other free crews.
- A tradesquare and a gambling den are the other two largest structures in Bloodcove, servicing the meditator role between Mwgani Expanse denizens and traders from the other nations of Garund.
Organizations Within
- The free pirate crew and the merchant guild of the Thornwick family run all operations within Bloodcove, and any other people in the city are visitors with strict guidelines and rules to follow.
Major Conflicts
- The semi-regular Froghemoth rampages occur during particularly hot or otherwise notable summer months, perhaps every four to six years, although the schedule can vary between decades. These rampages inevitably result in massive loss of life and structural damage, and have resulted in several iterations of Bloodcove failing before the Thornwick family moved to the area and spent a considerable sum in fortifying the township in the past decade.
- The Consortium Brawl occurred when Cheliax diabolists from Vidrian attempted to take over the town and convert it to another one of their Devil Points, but was humerously stopped by a Froghemoth ambush that resulted in the Consortium being rounded up by the Thornwick crew and returned to the authorities of Vidrian.
Events in the Age of Renewal
- Aside from the Froghemoth encounters, the town of Bloodcove has had relatively few events that weren't the complete collapse of their township. The arrival of the Thornwick family was the fourth such attempt at revival in the Age of Renewal, and the town seems to be holding its breath to see how the next Froghemoth season goes after the near collapse of the city walls from the previous ambush a few years prior.
