History
World Weep Opening History
The city-state of Kibwe, located in the eastern jungles of the Mwangi Expanse, did not suffer the same critical losses as nearly every other faction sent to the Heroes’ March did for one reason: they were not reliant on its flesh and blood military forces for safety. Kibwe was instead protected by huge millennia-old granite walls strengthened by countless runes and the Pillar-Watcher statue sentries that had fulfilled their legend and come to life after the birth of the World Weep. The work of the city’s ancestors survived the experiments of Mathesis, successfully turning back not only the alchemical rain but also droves of constructs and oozes laying siege from the jungle. Many, including the city’s own inhabitants, would come to wonder why the Alchemist did not send a larger strike to fall upon them when her initial assault failed, with some thinking hopefully that they had been forgotten, while others came to more grim conclusions that she wanted to test her experiments on the ever-sturdy protections as some sort of refinement center.
Age of Collapse History — Era of Mwangi's Heart
Kibwe, due in part to its uncollapsed status in the following centuries, became a central part of the Expanse's circulatory system. Kibwe became a central part of the Expanse's trade system due in large part to its ability to stand fast against encroaching threats . All kinds of valuable resources moving across the Expanse eventually flowed through the city-state, with the most precious things being stored locally in fortified vaults. Due to the protections only covering a certain square footage and the deadly creations that would semi-regularly come crawling out of the jungle, Kibwe was never able to expand to its full potential and instead became a vertical township. Nearly every square inch of the city, up to the top of the pillars where the Pillar-Watchers stood vigil, soon became utilized, and the town had to become more strict and creative with how it would control its growth and ever-shrinking space.
Age of Renewal History
When news of the fall of Mathesis came to the Mwangi Expanse and the alchemical experiments and constructs no longer emerged from the surrounding jungle, the city of Kibwe spilled out into the surrounding jungle like a river dam burst open. Due to the population that was near max potential capacity in relation to its centuries of civil engineering, the cramped city quickly diffused into the surrounding countryside as people found new opportunities afforded to them.
Government
The Kibwe Council has expanded from its original purpose of a community governing council to a strict judicial republic or kritarchy, where petitioners of the various city blocks would advocate in court for many issues, including usage and allocation of limited city space, and how to ensure that the population does not outpace the capacity of the space available. Despite the nation expanding from a single city to a coalition of multiple townships, these judges have worked the system to remain in charge and serve as the ruling body for the nation, with judges hailing from the city serving as a supreme court, and judges from the surrounding courts known as the lower courts.
Points of Interest
- The city of Kibwe itself still serves as the capital, and one of the most highly populated cities in Garund. Home to several towering structures, the city can almost look like a giant cube to the outside due to most of the space within the city being built up over thousands of years of civic planning to maximize efficient space usage. Space is a commodity in the city, and various unique cultures, organizations, guilds, and gangs have arisen over the centuries due to this contained environment.
- Several settlements and even cities have begun cropping up in the surrounding jungle lands affiliated with the Kibwe government. Some are agricultural settlements like Makaya, others are industrial or mining towns like Imen.
Organizations Within
- The Supreme and Lower Courts are the ultimate ruling body of Kibwe, composed of several judges who rule not only on individual court cases but also on national matters.
- Several guilds have popped up within the nation; The Kibwe Civic-Wizardry Academy is one of the most prominent due to the importance of maintaining the fragile ecosystem of the overcrowded city. Several trading companies and mercenary bands also exist to facilitate the trading economy that Kibwe has dominated in the Mwgani Expanse.
- Several streets and skyscraper-level gangs have risen to prominence in the underbelly of this metropolis. These gangs rise and fall depending on wars with each other and with the police forces of the city, but the gang that has lasted the longest is known as the Jungle Dragons, said to be led by an actual ancient dragon as its head.
Major Conflicts
- The city has been forged under pressure over a millennium as Mathesis's personal experimental combat ground. Her monstrocities, both alchemical and constructed, have continuously crawled out of the surrounding jungle and waged battle with the city's Pillar-Watcher protectors and those brave forces that have pledged to assist with their ancestors' protectors.
- Internally, several periods of civil unrest and gang warfare have dominated the history of the city for thousands of years. Multiple coups have been attempted to overthrow the Supreme Court, but for some reason, all have failed at some critical or crucial junction of their attempted plot. This has only served to increase the legitimacy claims of the courts to near deific levels, as they claim idealistic protection from guardian angels and ancestors over their reign.
- As the self-proclaimed heart of Mwangi, Kibwe has been included in many militaristic conflicts in its neighboring states in the region. Its militia have been included and refined in the Boggard Wars in the West, the Demon Conflicts of the Mualijae Nations, the reclaiming of Nine Walls, and the various diabolical conflicts within Vidrian.
Events in the Age of Renewal
- The grand-founding day of New Xatramba marks the date on which Kibwe City officially recognized and christened a child settlement away from its walls. This day also marks the creation of the Lower Courts, an interconnected system of judges that deal with matters of settlements outside of Kibwe City. Various decades later, many people in the nation advocate for the expansion of powers and representation of the Lower Courts and settlments of Kibwe outside of Kibwe City, but the Supreme Court is slow to pass legislation and law pertaining to these matters.
- The repelling and defeat of the Usaro Titan was the day when all of the nation of Kibwe banded together in the rampaging charge of the Usaro Demon-Creation, and successfully stopped it from its original goal of destroying Kibwe City. Known now as Unity Day, this event is a national holiday and has even begun being celebrated in other nations to a lesser extent, mainly due to the deals and trading opportunities the jolly nation extends.
Other notable changes from the past Golarion
The general population and characteristics of inhabitants mirror the past Golarion. The one notable change is more non-Mwgani immigrants and visitors to the city as it has overtaken all other settlements as being the trading capital of the Expanse, and perhaps all of Garund.
