CLUES - How to find them

A Guide to Looking for Clues

Looking for clues can be confusing. Here is a list of things to remember when looking for clues in D&D:

  • Rule #1: Write down everything!

  • ALWAYS seek out rumors at the local tavern FIRST!

  • ALWAYS search the body

  • ALWAYS search the room

  • Find the smart guy or the guy with connections

  • Ask ALL your unanswered questions

  • Talk to EVERYONE

  • Don't just run off to the next quest when you get a clue or direction. Gather all the information you can while in that area or town.

  • Often, you will search an area that has nothing in it. I will roll the dice anyway so that you don't know it's empty.

  • Use spells!

    • Commune (5th level cleric spell)

    • Speak with Dead (3rd level cleric spell)

    • Contact Other Plane (5th level wizard spell)

    • Charm person

    • Detect thoughts

    • Zone of truth

    • Raise dead

    • Resurrection

    • True Resurrection

  • Use your skills

    • Tracking footprints

    • Intimidate

    • Perception

  • Use political alliances such as the Harpers and other factions

  • Use connections: Look at your characters “background” and ask “Who from my past can I connect with to get information?”
