Chardansearavitriol better known as Ebondeath was supreme ruler of the swamp called the Mere of Dead Men for centuries, taking the Uthtower as his lair in 685DR.
For those in-the-know of the Cult of the Dragon, he is also one of the most widely-known "successes" in transforming a dragon into a Unknown. Part of the dark ritual of his creation also created others such as the high priest of the Church of Myrkul Ularan Mortus. After this transformation in 922 DR, Ebondeath vanished in 1202 DR and some of Myrkul's devoted believed he had ascended into an even greater form of immortality, making pilgrimages to the swamp.
Fear of this creature held back any other dragons making the swamp their lair until much later when the Cult of the Dragon convinced Voaraghamanthar to take the swamp.
