Njordr is envisioned as a towering figure of water and driftwood, with barnacles encrusting his shoulders and seaweed trailing like hair. His form is never fixed — sometimes a wave breaking against the rocks, other times a bearded sailor in salt-stained clothes. Sailors believe Njordr guides safe passage through the ever-frozen waters of the Niflheim Sea, and that he keeps the fish plentiful if properly appeased. Small shrines of driftwood, shells, and carved Pufflin bones can be found tucked into dockside corners.
Njordr’s power is modest compared to greater gods, but in the perilous seas of the Isles, his favor can mean the difference between safe harbor and death beneath the ice.
Cultural Tie-Ins
- Believed to have taught the first Goliaths of Midgard how to split the ice with boats.
- Midgard’s fishmongers claim their luck comes from Njordr’s hand, not their own nets.
- Some Duergar in Nidavellir mock Njordr, calling him a “fickle puddle,” but still whisper his name when crossing frozen rivers.
