The nobility of Valoria is the ruling class of the Empire. While they all are subservient to the emperor, their lands and wealth give them a great deal of influence and power over day-to-day life within their spheres of influence. They are the arbiters of law within their own lands, and while they must follow the Emperor's law, there is always some leeway in the interpretation of the law.
Being the senior member of a noble family grants membership into the August Assembly, the formal body of nobles that exists to provide counsel to the emperor.
