Escape from Ironreach | Session 6: Below Decks

Snuki was looting the forward cabins while Vivenna and Willfram went below decks and found a group of zombie fish-men gathered around a sea chest. Vivenna didn’t hide on the first turn because she had about 15 HP compared to Willfram’s 5, but that changed fast—there were around six to eight of the fish creatures.

Willfram yelled for Snuki and Circe. Circe came running, but Snuki didn’t acknowledge him and continued cheerfully pawing through the officers’ quarters. There were some really dicey moments—Vivenna was almost killed again, though she was saved by the leeches. She tried calling for Snuki herself, but still got no response.

When Snuki finally finished looting the forward cabins of the most random assortment of junk imaginable, they wandered forward and saw the fight through the cargo hold opening. Snuki immediately started hurling Magic Stones to help us—VERY LOUDLY exclaiming about the fight.

It turned out Snuki’s ears were still stuffed from the harpy fight. Snuki had been the only one who thought to plug their ears during that encounter.

We killed the fish-men and opened the trunk they had been standing around. Inside was a cat. The cat’s collar said “Pesto,” but Willfram renamed him “Snarl,” and he’s already very attached. The cat showed him a hidden compartment in the chest that contained an enchanted gold tooth that sort of functions like a Bag of Holding (oh, the visuals), along with a couple other things I can’t remember.

We took a short rest, and then Vivenna snuck into the cargo hold, which is completely underwater. She used Dancing Lights to illuminate the area and grabbed the nearest chests first because there was clear evidence of sharks in the area—even if none were in the hold at that exact moment.

One chest was full of ten healing potions, and the other contained a Potion of Giant Strength and a Potion of Heroism.

On her third trip, Vivenna went down to retrieve some magic arrows. This was obviously a trap by the DM, and her stealth wasn’t quite good enough to escape a shark attack—despite Circe tossing pieces of harpy into the water outside the ship to keep the sharks busy.

Vivenna had told Snuki to watch for sharks from the entrance, but she hadn’t specified what he should do if he saw one. So Snuki helpfully slammed the hatch closed to save everyone else from the shark.

Kobolds, man.

Willfram about had a heart attack when the trap door jammed and he had to break it open, while Snuki stood there saying, “It’s okay. There are more where she came from—we’ll get another.”

But Willfram managed to get the door open, and Vivenna used Disengage to escape the shark.

We decided to sleep on the ship and try the hold again tomorrow. There’s so much stuff down there. We’ve set watches for the night—we’ll see how it goes.
