The Hourglass Cosmology

Eochora is just one world among many in a large multiverse. Scholars plot out the planes of the multiverse in a cosmologic model that vaguely resembles an hourglass, with two equally sized bulbs . Although this model is hotly debated, it proves quite useful in the art of drawing magical energy to cast spells. However, recent scholars have pointed out that much of the model is based on feelings, hunches, and superstition rather than scientific facts. Several recent researchers claim some planes should be in a different bulb than classically organized, but the difficulty in studying the planes and the inherent danger in doing so has made acceptance of new theories difficult. Regardless of the truth, the hourglass cosmology described below remains the most popular method of understanding the multiverse.

The Upper Bulb

The upper bulb is associated with light, life, freedom, happiness, and joy. In the center column, directly above the Prime Material Plane, is The Feywild, another material plane full of life and free creatures. Above and around the Feywild are positioned the four Divine Planes: The Ivory Sanctum, The Everdrifting Isles, The Realm of the Ageless, and Seraphic Euphoria. These planes form the wide part of the upper bulb. Above and in the center of them is Nezauch, the plane of pure positive energy and light, from which each of these draws its magical power.

The Fulcrum

In the center of the hourglass model is Eochora, The Prime Material Plane, itself. As the nexus of light and dark, order and chaos, happiness, and sadness, it draws energy from all the planes above and below it.

The Lower Bulb

The lower bulb is associated with darkness, death, sadness, and loss. In the center column, directly below the Prime Material Plane, is The Shadowfell, a dark reflection of Eochora full of decay, destruction, and undead. Below and around the Shadowfell are positioned the four Elemental Planes: The Fissures of Malachite, The Ceaseless Sea, The Open Expanse, and The Charred Dominion. These planes form the wide part of the lower bulb. Below and in the center of them is Thagirion, the plane of pure negative energy and darkness, which pulls in magical energy from other planes into an endless void of nothingness.

The Liminality

The The Liminality is the "sand" that fills the hourglass. It is the space between and around all the other planes, and physical travel to them generally requires passing through the Liminality.
