Halruaa's military research branch, whose experiments range from the mundane to pushing the edge of ethics and morality. The Izzet members—obsessive, keen, and creative intellectuals, who often have short attention spans—are known to perform magical experiments, ever with reckless abandon and sometimes with spectacular but severe results.
In recent years the League has extended its research to humanoid subjects, magically transferring the traits of various animals into humans, elves, and dragonborn. The goal of the Guardian Project is to build an army perfectly adapted to a variety of combat situations. These hyper-evolved specimens are called Simic hybrids, though they sometimes refer to themselves as guardians.
One of their most revolutionary experiments was the Twin Soul Project, in which biomancers successfully cloned and enhanced humanoids for the first time. The project hit an abrupt roadblock when one of the lead scientists and source of clone material, Ammankol Muut, defected and escaped Halruaa with the first successful clone. Efforts to find both individuals have been unsuccessful so far.
