Vajra Safahr is the seventh Blackstaff of Waterdeep, a title she ascended to in 1479 DR when her mentor, Samark Dhanzscul, was killed. She was only 22 years old when she assumed the title, making her the youngest Blackstaff in Waterdeep's history.
Though naturally a sorceress, she abandoned the art of sorcery at the age of fourteen and adopted wizardry instead. Vajra is a highly skilled mage, said to be capable of spellcasting even while entirely paralyzed. She aims to turn Waterdeep, and specifically her Blackstaff Academy, into the center of magical study in Faerûn.
Blackstaff is the title and name given to the master of the eponymous staff and Blackstaff Tower, including Blackstaff Academy, as well as the Archmage of Waterdeep. "Blackstaff" was originally a nickname given to Khelben Arunsun because of his powerful staff of the same name, but after his death it became the title used by his successors. Vajra’s heir is the sorceress Laraelra Harsard.
The Blackstaff gives orders to the members of Force Grey but rarely works with them directly unless the threat facing Waterdeep is particularly dire.
