The Church of the Silver Flame was founded in Thrane, and it is the most commonly practiced religion in the country. During the Last War, the people of Thrane chose to depose the monarchy and put the church in charge, and so Thrane has been a theocracy for the last 70 years. The current head of state, the divinely appointed Keeper of the Flame, is an 11 year old girl, Jaela Daran. As a result of her young age, Thrane is effectively governed by the Council of Cardinals and Jaela's regent, High Cardinal Krozen.

In 299 YK, a terrible eruption split the ground and a great pillar of crimson fire emerged from the resulting chasm. No one understood the significance of the flame, but this was the partial release of a demonic overlord. A paladin dedicated to Dol Arrah, Tira Miron, received a vision of a great rainbow-winged serpent, warning her of the evil emerging in the east. Tira rallied the forces of Thrane, and together they defeated the monsters that were worshipping the flame.

Tira faced the emerging demon as the great serpent from her vision dove headfirst into the crimson fire. Tira watched the demon and the serpent struggle in the flame for what seemed to be an eternity. When it became clear that the demon was winning, the serpent used the last of it's power to encircle the demon in it's coils and sunk it's teeth into the demons neck. At the same time, it sent a mental plea to Tira, who didn't hesitate to leap into the flame and plunge her greatsword, Kloinjer, through the serpent and demon both.

According to legend, a powerful explosion erupted, and the hot crimson fire became a cool silver flame. Tira had joined with it, and become the Voice of the Silver Flame, and the Church of the Silver Flame was born. Flamekeep, at the time a simple stone castle, was erected around the pillar of silver fire.

In time, that castle became a cathedral, and a city grew around it. By 400 YK, the Church of the Silver Flame was the dominant religion in Thrane. In 914 YK, with the death of King Thalin, Thrane's people rejected the heir’s claim to the throne and turned to the Church of the Silver Flame for leadership. The Keeper of the Flame took control of the temporal as well as the spiritual reins of the nation.

Life & Society

Thranes are generous and good-hearted people. They are a bit more conformist, culturally, than other nations, but this is in part to protect their communities. The church educates the populace on supernatural threats. Undead are more likely to rise from the bodies of evil people, and there is a balance to be struck between freedom and safety.

Almost every Thranish community has an archery range. In towns, this may be a structure with well-crafted targets, but in more rural areas it could be as simple as a small clearing with some bales of hay and crudely painted bullseyes. Archery is a meditational practice for followers of the flame, and has a myriad of benefits besides. It's a practical skill for hunting, a sport that locals can compete with each other in. It's also pragmatic, when battling the forces of evil, to be as far away from the monsters as possible.

Government & Politics

The biggest political debate within Thrane is probably who should rule the country. Most are content with the theocracy, but many also believe that the monarchy should be restored. The Thranish royal family are currently figureheads, without any real power. Queen Diani ir'Wynarn supports the return of the monarchy, but her supporters are mostly nobles. A third proposition has been suggested by Captain Otherro of the Knights of Thrane, that the monarchy should be restored and rule alongside the church.

All of Thrane's nobles lost their governing authority when the country became a theocracy. Most of them kept their land, so this didn't eliminate their power, and many of them simply transitioned into being wealthy families. Many families lost their heirs in the war, and whilst in other countries their land would've been transferred to other noble families, in Thrane that land was turned over to the church. Different nobles dealt with this loss of power in different ways, some joined organisations such as the Aurum and leant fully into economic power, and others adapted to the new power structure and embraced the church. A small portion of the nobility left the country, joining the expedition out to Q'barra in 928 YK to found New Galifar.

Thrane is still rebuilding from the results of the Last War, and its treasury is mostly depleted. It is in debt to many of the dragonmarked houses, particularly House Kundarak, and as a result of this taxes are high. The lack of funds also means that, even two years after the end of the war, much of Thrane has yet to be repaired. These economic struggles are worsened by the reduced presence of the dragonmarked houses in Thrane. Whilst all of the houses maintain some presence in the nation, none of them use it as a headquarters. This is largely because Thrane has more restrictive regulations than the other nations, and more anti-corruption laws in place.

Cyran Refugees

Whilst Breland is the only nation that is called out as having welcomed Cyran refugees with open arms, Thrane didn't turn them away. Unlike Breland, Thrane didn't build refugee camps or settlements like New Cyre. Instead, Thrane welcomed refugees, clothed them, housed them, but also made clear that they were expected to integrate into Thranish society rather than living separately.

This was an easy transition for most of them, as the Silver Flame was also widely worshipped in Cyre. Whilst Cyrans in Thrane do tend to stick together in smaller communities, there is nothing like the district of High Walls in any Thranish city, and most Thranes just view their new neighbours as Thranes.
