Threshold is a small settlement that sits on the border between Breland and Droaam. It is set up against the northern edge of the Graywall Mountains, and so the southern edge of the town is a cliff face. The settlement is built around the ancient ruins of a Dhakaani fort, the only significant remnant of which is the western wall of the town, and the aquaduct beneath the town which supplies the town with water. Much like New Cyre, Threshold is expanding faster than it can house its citizens, and hundreds of people are living in a shantytown known as the Tents.
Breland accepted refugees from Cyre in the wake of the Day of Mourning, and King Boranel ir'Wynarn tasked Breland's nobles to find places for these refugees. Count ir'Blis, who rules Ardev, allowed refugees to settle in the lands around his city, whilst also granting land around Threshold to many of his veteran soldiers. Many of the refugees are struggling to find a path forward in this new world, and there is tension between the Cyrans and the Brelish veterans, who until recently considered the Cyrans to be enemies.
Travelers going between Breland and Droaam usually pass through Threshold, though only a few monsters live in the town. Even so, its not unusual to see an ogre or a minotaur in Threshold, even if they're just passing through.
Quickstone
Quickstone is an unusual stone substance that to date has only ever been found in the Graywall Mountains. It has three distinct states, and can be transitioned between them with magic. Soft quickstone is a surprisingly lightweight red material with a similar consistency to sandstone, whilst wet quickstone has the consistency of soft clay and maintains this fluidity even when exposed to heat. Fixed quickstone is rust-brown and considerably harder and more durable than granite. Magic can be used to shift quickstone between these states, though once it has been transitioned to fixed quickstone it cannot be changed again. Many of the buildings in Threshold are sculpted from Quickstone, which makes the buildings look similar to adobe structures.
