20th Dravago, 999 YK
- Reaffirming their plan, they go to tackle the mammoth and the wolves.
- Most of them sneak up to get into a better position, but Naze isn't good at stealth so he hangs back.
- The wolves don't notice them, though the mammoth seems to. It's got bigger problems though.
- Valaari throws their boomerang and hits one of the wolves, and is dejected when it swears in response. They speak.
- Valaari isn't sure about this all of a sudden
- Warren runs up and stabs his sword right into one of the wolve's flanks. Runmae then runs up and bonks it.
- The mammoth takes advantage of the situation, and grabs the wolf.
- Bhaltair casts Translate to try and speak to the wolves.
- The mammoth begins ragdolling the wolf around, whilst it haphazardly uses its breath weapon. The other wolf calls the party scavengers and also breath weapons them.
- Warren slides under the ragdolling wolf and begins climbing the mammoth.
- Runmae trips the mammoth(!) and then bonks it on the nose. It isn't a fan of this.
- It retaliates by slamming the wolf into her. This kills the wolf.
- Bhaltair tries to talk to the remaining wolf, saying they can come to a peaceful resolution to this!
- The wolf snarls at them that "this is your fault!" and then ran away.
- Warren climbs up onto the mammoth's back and stabs it in the back of the head.
- Runmae smashes it's leg with her hammer, bringing it down, and then caves in its skull.
- After the combat, Bhaltair climbs a tree and keeps watch with their spyglass.
- Bhaltair informs the others what the wolf said, and they sigh. It is what it is.
- They begin skinning the wolf and mammoth, while Naze tends to their wounds.
- Valaari does the wolf and Runmae does the mammoth. Warren wanted to do the mammoth, but Runmae said no. Whilst skinning it, Runmae notices that it has additional, small tusks growing out of random parts of its bodies.
- They also take the meat from both corpses.
- Naze complains that they're now ivory poachers, so that's great.
- Warren pockets some of the little tusks, as trophies.
- Naze expresses doubt about their mission here, the animals they were hunting weren't meant to be sentient. What about the Remorhaz they're looking for? What if it's sentient?
- Valaari says it has too many legs, it doesn't deserve life.
- Valaari reflects on what they know of Remorhaz and how they might track it. They need to look for large, smooth tunnels, as the Remorhaz burrows through ice and snow using its internal heat source.
- Valaari asks Bhaltair to look for big holes with their spyglass.
- Bhaltair can see some in the next band down, where the temperature will drop even further.
- Bhaltair asks if Remorhaz are scavengers, and Valaari explains that Remorhaz are ambush predators. Bhaltair suggests building a sled and loading it up with mammoth meat to trigger the ambush.
- Valaari isn't sure if the Remorhaz has some kind of thermal sense, is it sensitive to heat? Maybe they need to warm up the meat.
- They decide to head back up to the green belt to make the sled, as the cold is getting to them and there is risk of frostbite. They notice that the sun seems to get bigger as they go up.
- It only takes them half an hour to build the sled, as both Bhaltair and Runmae do a great job.
- They fill Runmae's cooking pot with some water, boil it over a fire and then wrap it in mammoth hide to create a kind of hot water bottle. They then place it in the sled.
- Bhaltair will use tremor signs to imitate the mammoth walking.
- They proceed down the mountain to where they saw the holes, and the temperature drops dramatically. They can't spend long down here.
- Trees have been knocked over down here, this gives Naze a frighten. He casts light on his gloves to try and warm himself, even though it produces no heat.
- They push the sled down the hill.
- It travels some distance before it falls over, spilling rapidly freezing mammoth meat all over the snow. A few seconds later, it explodes in a cascade of ice and snow, obliterating the sled (and the pot?), revealing the Remorhaz.
- Runmae runs forward and hits the Remorhaz, and it responds by biting her and then swallowing her whole. The rest of the party witness her just disappear down its throat, where she begins to cook inside it.
- Valaari examines the situation and calls out to everyone to try and cut Runmae out of it. They then rush forward and try to do that, but their weapon just glances off of it.
- Warren has a silly idea but thinks about the consequences, and decides to not do it.
- Instead he runs around to flank it and stabs it, cutting Runmae out of it.
- Those in melee with it start to burn, taking fire damage, and their weapons do too.
- The Remorhaz uses it's breath weapon, burning Runmae, Valaari and Zaphkiel, and then it smacks Warren with its tail.
- Naze ran up and healed Runmae
- Bhaltair finishes it off with a Force Barrage as it rears up, they weren't even looking!
- Runmae hooks it with the long hammer, and Valaari wedges pitons into it to allow them to drag it, as it's hot to touch. It leaves a trail of melted snow in its wake.
- They harvest it, and then Bhaltair spends even longer foraging parts from it. They spend 11 hours to get the maximum value out of the corpse (another 45 gp).
- Taazran Sharket offered to turn the Remorhaz materials into a suit of Remorhaz Armour, once they bring them back to Kastar Dar.
- Valaari takes some of its leg segments as a trophy.
- Bhaltair has a look for some unique plants, but everything here seems to be native to Eberron as well.
