David and the Well

David had forgotten all about Kitty Kitty, aka the puzzle cat. Jumping into the well was all he could think about. Kitty had told him that the way to the Star Gem was down into the well and through a short tunnel and then up 20 or so feet. David, who had never swam and had only seen this much water once before, and that was earlier in this same adventure, was naturally nervous to have to try to swim. But it worse than regular nervousness. He was in a near panic and couldn’t understand why. Plus is back itched terribly. He felt like ants were crawling all over it. Other members of his adventuring group were proceeding into the well and evidently hand holds were available to make the movement through the tunnel an easy affair.

Still, David didn’t want to jump in. He tried to clear his mind. He closed his eyes and began to regulate his breathing. After a few moments he felt calm enough to attempt to swim through the tunnel. He went in quite ungracefully, slipping on the side of the well and splashing face first. He reached out for a hand hold and found it more difficult than the thought it would be to pull himself through.

“We’re drowning!” A panicked voice screamed in his mind in an unfamiliar accent. “We’re going down! Get out of your armor!”

But I’m not wearing any armor, David thought. He did have his shield strapped to his back, but he was pretty sure that wasn’t what the voice in his head was talking about. Instead David kept pulling himself along until he was through the tunnel and surfaced on the other side.

It was as Kitty described. He would need to ascend 20 feet up very slick walls.

“Get out mate, we don’t have much time!”

Shut the fuck up, David yelled in his mind at the voice. His waterlogged clothes made floating difficult and David was beginning to get worried. The voice was grating on his nerves and his back was worse than ever.

What the fuck is going on? David thought, starting to panic ever so slightly.

The voice in his head was going on and on in that strange accent. “Get out of the water! We know better! Get out!”

David’s head began to pound and his vision became blurry. He couldn’t even see his allies anymore. Who was in the water? Who was out already? He didn’t know. He wasn’t even thinking of Sora. He just needed that voice to shut up.

Then he could feel it, the slight vibration as one of his psionic talents was activated. He didn’t even consciously know what he was doing when he sprang out of the water as if jumping off a trampoline. He landed smoothly at the top.

I didn’t even know I could that, he thought. Nice.

“Yeah, pretty good boyo.” The voice replied. It said no more and his back stopped itching.

Weird, David thought.
