Xaros

⚔️ Xaros – The Walled Exile of the Southwest

Capital: Dreadspire (fortress-city)
Ruler: Lord-Regent Kaelor Veyth (The Warden of the Wall)
Population: ~70,000 (mostly criminals, exiles, mercenaries, and descendants of outcasts)
Symbol: A broken chain over a black gate
Role: Prison-realm, frontier against monsters, realm of fear

📍 Geography & Setting

Xaros lies in the rugged, cursed lands of the southwest, cut off from the rest of the world by the colossal Wall of Chains — an immense stone-and-iron fortification said to be as tall as the trees of Piefl and as long as the mountains of Warrock. The wall’s gates are heavily guarded, for beyond them lies a wasteland infested with monsters, marauding bandit hordes, and darker things whispered of in legend.

The land within is harsh: twisted forests, broken hills, and ruins of long-forgotten kingdoms. Storms roll frequently across its skies, and strange red stones litter the valleys, glowing faintly as though cursed.

⚒ History & Origins

Xaros was once part of the wider kingdoms, but when the southern wilds grew uncontrollable, the realm was walled off generations ago. It became the place where unwanted criminals, traitors, and enemies of the crown were exiled, forced to survive among monsters.

What was meant as a death sentence became a dark society of survivors. Fortresses and settlements were carved out from the wilderness by sheer will, creating a realm of its own — grim, brutal, but undeniably alive.

🏙 Major Settlements

  • Dreadspire (Capital): A fortress-city built atop a jagged black mesa, with tiered walls and spiked battlements. Known for its infamous pits where criminals are branded before being cast into Xaros.

  • Blood Ruby (Abandoned Settlement): Once a mining town, abandoned after a mysterious calamity. Red crystal veins still gleam in its collapsed shafts, and legends say monsters nest there.

  • Shackleford: A frontier town at the Wall of Chains, where exiles are processed and cast out. Half-fortress, half-gallows.

  • Ashmarrow: A hidden settlement deep in the wastelands, rumored to harbor exiles who formed their own rogue kingdom.

⚔ Society & Culture

Xaros has no unified culture — it is a patchwork of exiles, mercenaries, and monster-slayers. Life here is brutal and short, but fiercely free. Law is decided by strength, cunning, or local councils of survivors.

Values: Strength, survival, and distrust of outsiders.
Traditions:

  • The Chainmark: Every exile is branded with a broken chain symbol before passing through the gates.

  • Blood Feasts: Some bands celebrate survival after monster hunts with grim feasts of fire and song.

  • Trial by Beast: Disputes are often settled by pitting accused criminals against captured monsters.

🛡 Military & Role

While disorganized, Xaros fields some of the most fearsome fighters alive, hardened by endless survival against monsters. Many kingdoms hire Xarosi mercenaries, though their loyalty is dubious.

  • Monster Hunters: Specialists who forge weapons from monster bones and blood-crystals.

  • Bandit Warbands: Some exiles unite into raiding hordes, terrorizing even Xaros’ own people.

  • The Wall Wardens: Soldiers stationed on the Wall of Chains, sworn to keep Xaros’ horrors from spilling north.

💰 Economy

Though cut off, Xaros has its own rough economy:

  • Monster remains: Hides, fangs, and blood-crystals, sold through secret channels.

  • Black markets: Smuggling networks thrive, linking Xaros to outsiders despite the wall.

  • Mining ruins: Dangerous expeditions still comb places like Blood Ruby for cursed ores and crystals.

🕯 Religion & Belief

Faith in Xaros is fractured. Some still pray to Sylthar, the Green Warden, but most have turned to darker gods or survival cults. Others worship the Monstrous Ones, ancient spirits said to rule the wilderness. Blood sacrifices and strange rituals are not uncommon.

⚖ Current Affairs

  • Blood Ruby’s Curse: Rumors claim the abandoned settlement is stirring — red light glows in its mines, and caravans vanish near its ruins.

  • Monster Swarms: Creatures in greater numbers than ever before assail Dreadspire and the Wall of Chains.

  • Exile Unrest: Whispers of a charismatic warlord in Ashmarrow threaten to unite the exiles under a single banner.

  • Cracks in the Wall: Parts of the Wall of Chains show signs of collapse — if it falls, Xaros’ horrors may spill into the wider world.

📜 In Summary:
Xaros is a realm of fear, exile, and survival — a kingdom that should not exist, but endures nonetheless. Walled off from the world, it is both prison and frontier, where monsters roam, bandits rule, and every day is a struggle to survive. Its abandoned towns, like Blood Ruby, whisper of curses and untold power, tempting exiles and adventurers alike to risk everything in the land of chains.
