In the spring and summer the Elven Nobility has a series of balls and other formal events to make alliances and allow their children to find acceptable spouses. There is a winking acknowledgement that who one spends "time" with during the social season, does not necessarily mean that they will be married. There is even an event held every summer where it is socially acceptable to re-unite with someone you spent a social season with, at least for a night.
