Starships are organized into four primary categories — the corvette, the cruiser, the frigate, and the capital ship — but may be divided into more specific types based on their purpose or use. Though the size is used to define a category, it is not an exact metric. Outliers such as extra-wide ships with small cockpits can straddle multiple categories.
Any vehicle that facilitates the controlled transport of people or cargo between planets is considered a starship or void vehicle. These range widely from single-person fighters to enormous starship carriers manned by thousands of crew members. Stellar stations can house up to tens of thousands of people but are not considered starships since they primarily serve as a home or settlements.
Vehicles that cannot be piloted are known as shuttles, commonly found as escape pods or high-velocity interplanetary transports.
