Sometimes, the curse, or blessing, of Lycanthropy becomes so entrenched in someone's bloodline that something new gets created. Shifters are people who once had Lycanthropy within their bloodline. However, this type of lycanthropy has become so entrenched in their bloodline that they often have a form that incorporates many beast-like features. Nonetheless, it also has become so diluted in most cases that they can only shift for a short time, can't change into a full animal form, and always can keep control of themselves and their senses.
